Trees Shrubs And Woody Vines Of Northern Florida And Adjacent Georgia And Alabama written by Robert K. Godfrey and has been published by University of Georgia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988 with Nature categories.

This complete and authoritative work provides identification keys, full descriptions, and line drawings that make it possible to identify 383 native and naturalized species of trees, shrubs, and woody vines found in northern Florida and adjacent Georgia and Alabama. Casual observers of the lower coastal plain may at first see a landscape dominated by pines. Closer observation reveals a great diversity of plants--patterns of contrasting vegetation caused by the complex physical and biotic factors at work. In this richly vegetated area, a rise of only four feet in elevation can bring significant changes in community composition, changes comparable, perhaps, to those occurring on a four-thousand-foot mountainside. The descriptions in this guide are useful not only for identification but also for their help in enhancing the user's knowledge of the plants. Each description is followed by information on the habitat in which the species is known to occur, the species' general location within the area under study, and its overall geographic range. Whenever possible, vegetative characteristics have been used in the keys so that the book is useful beyond the sometimes brief flowering seasons of the species. The use of technical terminology has been minimized in the keys and descriptions, and a full glossary is provided. Based on thirty years of constant study and firsthand observation, Robert K. Godfrey's manual is a definitive work on this area's notably diverse woody flora, from the common longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) and Jackson-brier (Smilax smallii) to locally rarer species such as the fragrant sumac (Rhus aromatica), Spanish bayonet (Yucca gloriosa), and ornamental Chinese tallow-tree (Sapium sebiferum).

Flora Of The Gran Desierto And R O Colorado Delta written by Richard Stephen Felger and has been published by University of Arizona Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-07 with Science categories.

From the Pinacate lava fields and expansive dunes to the shores of the Gulf of California, the Gran Desierto is one of the hottest and driest places in the Western Hemisphere. Yet this region in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico embraces a remarkable number of habitats with a fascinating and surprisingly rich flora. This is the heart of the Sonoran Desert, still in a largely primordial state, in juxtaposition with the ravished wetlands of the once great Río Colorado. Flora of the Gran Desierto is the culmination of more than twenty-five years of research in this magnificent desert and delta by botanist Richard Felger. This comprehensive floristic study of more than 565 species of vascular plants features original diagnostic descriptions and innovative identification keys to the families, genera, and species. Particular attention has been devoted to taxa that are poorly known. Even weeds and their histories are treated in detail. Hundreds of illustrations by such eminent botanical artists as Lucretia Brezeale Hamilton, Matt Johnson, and Bobbi Angell will aid in the identification of plants. Common names of plants are given in English, Spanish, and O'odham. While emphasizing scientific accuracy, the book is written in an accessible style. Felger's observations and knowledge of plant ecology, geographic distribution, evolution, ethnobotany, plant variation and special adaptations, and the history of the region provides botanists, naturalists, ecologists, conservationists, and anyone else celebrating the desert with readable, interesting, and important information. With two of Mexico's newest biosphere reserves—the Pinacate and the Upper Gulf of California—this region is a keystone for desert conservation efforts. Its location linking vast preserves to the north makes this book especially useful for anyone interested in borderland studies and the Sonoran Desert. Flora of the Gran Desierto represents a most creative, definitive, and enthusiastic treatment of Sonoran Desert plant life and is highly relevant to ecological restoration in deserts and wetlands in arid places worldwide.

In recent years there has been increased interest in growing willow and poplar trees, as fast-growing species that have several purposes, including use as biofuels for energy production. However, silviculture of these trees has been constrained by diseases such as Melampsora rusts. This book provides a comprehensive review of over two decades of extensive study of the rust diseases affecting willow and poplar. It provides insights into the population biology of Melampsora rusts in Europe, China, India and Chile, the genetics of their resistance, and their interaction with their hosts. The book offers information essential to the development of effective and sustainable disease control measures including the use of willow genotype mixtures and biological control agents.

This vol. is the first published product of the Pennsylvania Flora Database, created & maintained at the Morris Arboretum of the U. of Pennsylvania. The database has its roots in the work of Edgar T. Wherry, John M. Fogg, Jr., & Herbert A. Wahl, the Atlas of the Flora of PennsylvaniaÓ (Wherry et al. 1979), published by the Morris Arboretum. Over a period of 40 years, Wherry & his colleagues gathered data from the major Pennsylvania herbaria & manually placed a quarter of a million dots on over 3500 maps (Fogg 1944). The Pennsylvania Flora Database retains the emphasis on specimen-based, site-specific data. The checklist of included taxa has undergone extensive review to reflect recent taxonomic & nomenclatural revisions. Questionable specimens have been re-evaluated with the result that several taxa included in earlier works were dropped. Recent discoveries have been added & distribution data has been updated. This vol. also includes collections made in the 1990s in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Natural Diversity Inventory (PNDI), the state heritage program. The maps present the accumulated collection of information for each taxon as represented in the herbaria. Illus., reprinted 1996.
