Kenneth Hsu's previous books have fascinated general audiences and served as accessible texts for students of geology. Here this leading earth scientist relates the study of the Alps to his theory of tectonic facies, thus demonstrating how the plate tectonics model can be used to understand the geology of mountains. Mountain chains have individualities, each one being different from the others, but they also share some common characteristics since they are all built according to the same body-plan ("Bauplan"). In this book Hsu looks at the geology of the Swiss Alps to explain that plan and to show how the Alps and other ancient mountain systems were constructed. "The Geology of Switzerland" will be invaluable for anyone taking a course in plate tectonics or structural geology, and it will be a useful guide for geologists, professional or amateur, traveling in the Alps. The first twelve chapters are a translation and revision of Hsu's popular German textbook "Geologie der Schweiz," while the last two formulate his facies concept and use it to discuss the classic mountain ranges of the world.

Excerpt from The Scenery of Switzerland: And the Causes to Which It Is Due IN the summer of 1861 I had the pleasure of spending a short holiday in Switzerland with Huxley and Tyndall. Tyndall and I ascended the Galenstock, and started with Benen (who afterwards lost his life on the Haut de Cry), up the Jungfrau, but were stopped by an accident to one of our porters, who fell into a deep crevasse, from which we had some difficulty in extricating him, as Tyndall has graphically described in his H ours of Exercise on the Alps. Gygi and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-22 with Science categories.

The book summarizes about 40 years of the author’s research on sedimentary geology in an epicontinental (shelf) sea during the Late Jurassic in northern Switzerland. It presents a synopsis of the interplay of varying paleoclimate, of sea level variations, of varying water depth, of sea floor topography, of vertical and lateral facies changes, of processes of sedimentation like aggradation and progradation, of compaction, of the great regional differences in rates of sedimentation and in isostatic equilibration of the lithosphere under load, and of concomitant synsedimentary tectonics. Regional variation in isostatic adjustment of the lithosphere to the increasing load of sediments is analyzed by means of time correlations based on a detailed biochronology of ammonites in combination with mineral stratigraphy using the comparatively stable clay mineral kaolinite, and with sequence stratigraphy.
