The Geology of the Canary Islands provides a concise overview of the geology and volcanology of the Canary Islands, along with 27 carefully planned day excursions comprising trips on all of the islands. Each stop includes a description on how to approach a site and where to park with GPS locations provided. The book covers all the spectacular features of the islands, including active ocean island volcanoes whose origins are linked to a hot spot or plume causing anomalously hot mantle material to intrude the African plate, submarine volcanic sequences uplifted inside the islands, sub- aerial shield volcanoes, and the remains of giant lateral collapses. Through its clearly written and richly color-illustrated introduction and field guide, this book is essential reading for geologists who visit the Canary Islands, one of the largest and most fascinating active volcanic systems in Europe. - Includes a forward by Prof. C. J. Stillman (Trinity College Dublin), a leading expert on the volcanology and geology of the Canary Islands - Features 500 full color images, coupled with in-depth introductory text and a chapter on each island, followed by 27 guided excursions that include all of the seven islands of the archipelago - Familiarizes the reader with the variety of volcanic landforms and eruptive products in the Canary Islands and provides practical support in recognition, recording, and interpretation - Develops understanding of growth, evolution, and destruction of ocean island volcanoes, promoting temporal and spatial thinking within a given geological framework

When asked by the General Editor to prepare a book-length treatment concerning the nature of the Canary Islands, our aims were rather ambitious. A general monograph was to be written, embracing all the disciplines of natural history applicable to these islands, and over twenty scientists were approached for contributions. However scientists are 'time machines' ; our proposed list of contents has changed a good many times. Cooporation of other authors was gained and, finally, a fairly rounded project appeared revealing different and lesser known aspects of Canary Island Nature. Since Centuries the Canary Islands have attracted the attention of travellers. Earliest reports may be traced back some two thousand years but real scientific investigation began about 1800, the time of Alexander von Humboldt and his visit to the islands; older reports are scarce, sometimes rather confusing because of geographic inaccuracies. But the 19th Century will remain as the century of fundamental explorations, connected with names such as Leopold von Buch, F. C. MacGregor, Sabin Berthelot, Philip Barker Webb, J. Viera y Clavijo, F. von Fritsch, C. Bolle, D. H. Christ, O. Simony, G. Hartung, H. Mayer etc. , all familiar and intimately connected with our knowledge of the natural history of the archipelago. Even the much criticised Ernst Haeckel has provided us with lively descriptions of his visit to one of the 'Fortunate Islands'. The 20th Century brought new interest, new fields to be explored, and new expeditions to the islands.

This volume comprises a selection of papers describing the main features of the Lanzarote and Chinijo Islands Geopark (Canary Archipelago, Spain). Of all the Global Geoparks worldwide, it is the only one that has officially evaluated and characterized specific areas as analogues for the geological and astrobiological exploration of Mars. The identification and characterization of terrestrial sites that can be used as planetary analogues are currently considered vital study areas of planetary geology and astrobiology. Written by experts in the various fields, this multidisciplinary book is a unique resource for graduate students and professionals alike.

Did you know that the Grand Bank earthquake of 1929 triggered ahuge submarine mass movement which broke submarine cables over adistance of up to 1000 km from its source and generated a tsunamiwhich devastated a small village in Newfoundland killing 27 people? The same happened in Papua New Guinea in 1998 with more than 2000casualties. Submarine mass movements of various sizes and styles areshaping the sea floor and are of concern for many facets of humanactivities both onshore and offshore. These include the development ofnatural resources, energy and communication transport, coastalinfrastructures and communities. This book provides a world-wideperspective of submarine mass movements and their consequences. Thishas been made possible by assembling excellent contributions fromactive researchers, groups, or institutions, thus providing fullcoverage of the many scientific and engineering aspects of this typeof marine and coastal geo-hazard. It covers fundamental as well assite specific studies from many areas including the Atlantic andPacific oceans, inner seas like the Mediterranean Sea, and fjordsusing the most recent technologies from multibeam sonar imagingtechniques, 3D seismic analysis, slope stability analysis, to debrisflow and tsunami modeling."Audience: " This book is of interest to any researcher in thefield of marine and coastal geo-hazards. It will be useful forplanners, scientists and engineers involved in the development ofoffshore and near-shore resources and also to those in charge of themanagement and mitigation of coastal hazards. For graduate students, this book provides an up-to-date vision of the process of submarinemass movements and their consequences from both ascientific and anengineering standpoint, and it includes a unique collection of theexisting literature on marine geo-hazards."CD-Rom included" This volume contains a CD-Rom which in additionto an electronically searchable vers
