An NPR Book of the Year At the dawn of the twentieth century, the United States was one of the world's richest, most populous, most technologically advanced nations. It was also a nation divided along numerous fault lines, with conflicting aspirations and concerns pulling it in different directions. And it was a nation unsure about the role it wanted to play in the world, if any. Americans were the beneficiaries of a global order they had no responsibility for maintaining. Many preferred to avoid being drawn into what seemed an ever more competitive, conflictual, and militarized international environment. However, many also were eager to see the United States taking a share of international responsibility, working with others to preserve peace and advance civilization. The story of American foreign policy in the first four decades of the twentieth century is about the effort to do both - "to adjust the nation to its new position without sacrificing the principles developed in the past," as one contemporary put it. This would prove a difficult task. The collapse of British naval power, combined with the rise of Germany and Japan, suddenly placed the United States in a pivotal position. American military power helped defeat Germany in the First World War, and the peace that followed was significantly shaped by a U.S. president. But Americans recoiled from their deep involvement in world affairs, and for the next two decades, they sat by as fascism and tyranny spread unchecked, ultimately causing the liberal world order to fall apart. America's resulting intervention in the Second World War marked the beginning of a new era, for the United States and for the world. Brilliant and insightful, The Ghost at the Feast shows both the perils of American withdrawal from the world and the price of international responsibility.

The essays collected in this book explore religious beliefs in a wide range of Scottish literature, and how these beliefs have been treated in Scottish criticism. Taking up Crawford Gribben's challenge that Scottish literary criticism has long been distorted by anti-Calvinist bias, especially in treating 16th and 17th century Scottish writing, the contributors broaden the discussion to discuss religious belief, and anti-religious critical bias or misunderstanding, in writers from the 18th century to the present, and from varied Scottish religious traditions, Episcopalian and Catholic, as well as Presbyterian. The book makes available Crawford Gribben's original essay, nine essays on individual works or writers previously published in Studies in Scottish Literature, with an introduction by Patrick Scott, an afterword by Crawford Gribben, and a checklist of suggested further reading on religion in Scottish literature. Contributors include Kelsey Jackson Williams on Archibald Pitcairne, Robert Irvine on John Galt's Annals of the Parish, Joanna Malecka on Thomas Carlyle, Matthew Wickman on Lewis Grassic Gibbon, Gerard Carruthers on A.J. Cronin, Brooke McLaughlin Mitchell on Fionn Mac Colla, Richard Rankin Russell on Muriel Spark, Petra Johana Poncarová on Derick Thomson, and Alison Jack on James Robertson.

Welcome to Unknown Pleasures, a food stand in Taipei's night market named after a Joy Division album, and also the location for a big-hearted new mystery set in the often undocumented Taiwan. August is Ghost Month in Taiwan—a time to pay respects to the dead and avoid unlucky omens. Jing-nan, who runs a food stand in a bustling Taipei night market, isn’t superstitious, but this August will haunt him nonetheless. He learns that his high school sweetheart has been murdered—found scantily clad near a highway where she was selling betel nuts. Beyond his harrowing grief, Jing-nan is confused. “Betel nut beauties” are typically women in desperate circumstances, but Julia Huang was high school valedictorian, and the last time Jing-nan spoke to her, she was far away, happily enrolled in NYU’s honor program. The facts don’t add up. Julia’s parents don’t think so, either, but the police seem to have closed the case without asking any questions. The Huangs beg Jing-nan to do some investigating—reconnect with old classmates, see if he can learn anything more about Julia’s last years. Reluctantly, he agrees, for Julia’s sake. But nothing can prepare him for what he is about to learn, or how it will change his life.

Most Americans believe the United States had been an isolationist power until the twentieth century. This is wrong. In a riveting and brilliantly revisionist work of history, Robert Kagan, bestselling author of Of Paradise and Power, shows how Americans have in fact steadily been increasing their global power and influence from the beginning. Driven by commercial, territorial, and idealistic ambitions, the United States has always perceived itself, and been seen by other nations, as an international force. This is a book of great importance to our understanding of our nation’s history and its role in the global community.
