In this stand alone short story will the beliefs of the main character stand firm, or will he come to accept the world and to a greater extent the Universe is a complex place where everything is not so straight forward. Joshua is a retired engineer, but was not just an engineer by trade; he was one by heart. Ever since he was a child he has been fascinated by the mechanisms and machines that the human race has created. His mind is methodical, pragmatic and his beliefs stand firm in facts and reason. What is observable, testable and measurable is what exists and everything else is simply myth or theory. His heart felt understanding of the world though is disrupted and altered by the strange sighting of a unexplained figure or what is more commonly thought of as a ghost. Will this experience alter his beliefs or will the ghosts of his previous values stand firm? Chris J Mitchell: "Everything we see in life is not black and white. Our beliefs are not always correct and even when we are sure of something we should be open to changing our minds. In that sense this story is not focused around a ghost or revealing the character of one, but the sighting of what the main character assumes is a ghost serves the premise of the book well."

Ghosts fascinate and frighten us, but why? What is it about a good ghost story that can even have a non-believer leaving the light on at night? For thousands of years humans have regaled each other with ghost stories, but, more than that, each generation has shaped and adapted the ghost to suit their culture and ideas. Ghosts have been used as tools of propaganda, as a threat to get people into Church, as a tool for revenge and, most often, as a good form of entertainment. The history of humanity is intrinsically linked to our spiritual beliefs, which in turn create our concept of the ghost. British culture is awash with ghostly legends, many unique to this land. But where do they come from? How far back can we trace our fascination with ghosts? Do we have the Romans or the Celts to thank for our legends of screaming skulls and demon hounds? And how has the way religion has changed in Britain, fundamentally altered the way ghosts are perceived? Social historian Sophie Jackson answers all these questions and more in her fascinating study of the ghost in Britain. Using both famous and previously unpublished examples of hauntings, she delves into the past, revealing what our belief in ghosts can tell us about ourselves. From prehistoric man, right up to the modern day, she traces the way the ghost has developed through time and the way we have tried to explain and debunk the things that go bump in the night.

This book is a partial history of religion and its beliefs and how they impact on our thinking about the supernatural. I have tried to show how the views of early man have had such a significant influence on the thoughts of people today, about the belief in the devil and demons, poltergeists, ghosts, evil spirits, etc. That they are all myths that have been propagated by religions across the world to encourage people to worship their particular god. How there was a momentous change in religious thinking when humankind moved from many gods (Polytheism) to one God (Monotheism). How hauntings are nothing more than negative or lost spirits trying to interact with this world for either help or to cause fear and discomfort. Even today there is a belief in lucky charms and superstition that runs through our everyday thoughts. The examples of possession and hauntings that we hear about more and more are nothing more than the spirits of people who have died playing on our beliefs. For example, if you believe the devil is attacking you then that's what the spirits will show you. They will prey on your fears to get the greatest effect. The more you believe you can be attacked by demons, the devil, ghosts and the like the more vulnerable you are to interference. How the more advanced medical science has become, the fewer people believe disease is the work of evil spirits, yet even today there are places around the world where exorcisms are performed to cure people of disease. How religious rituals still play a big part in supposedly removing unwanted spirits regardless of whether they are evil or lost and where they think they end up. I have examined how and why spirits get lost and show examples of how to help them find peace. How some may not even know, they are causing discomfort and pain to the living. I have discussed the different beliefs of some of the major religions regarding life after death and how they consider people will attain eternal peace.

When people talk about or experience paranormal activity, ghosts are often a component--and enough of a component to be worth investigating and discussing. the popular theory about ghosts is that they are spirits of humans who have died, but this isn't consistent with teachings from the Bible. So, as Christians, we ask "Who and what are they?" to answer this, God, Ghosts & Christians looks briefly at various current theories, followed by an extensive look at ghosts from a Christian point of view, supported by biblical passages and personal experiences of the author and others. the author, an ordained minister, will take you through all aspects of the existence of ghosts in our world--from the ones that are demons to those that are well meaning and kind. Don't be fooled by media and nonbelievers--there is a quiet, but serious, war going on between Christians and ghosts. This book will affirm your beliefs, show you how to protect yourself and those you love and encourage you to help quiet the "whispers," and win the war.

Ghosts and other supernatural phenomena are widely represented throughout modern culture. They can be found in any number of entertainment, commercial, and other contexts, but popular media or commodified representations of ghosts can be quite different from the beliefs people hold about them, based on tradition or direct experience. Personal belief and cultural tradition on the one hand, and popular and commercial representation on the other, nevertheless continually feed each other. They frequently share space in how people think about the supernatural. In Haunting Experiences, three well-known folklorists seek to broaden the discussion of ghost lore by examining it from a variety of angles in various modern contexts. Diane E. Goldstein, Sylvia Ann Grider, and Jeannie Banks Thomas take ghosts seriously, as they draw on contemporary scholarship that emphasizes both the basis of belief in experience (rather than mere fantasy) and the usefulness of ghost stories. They look closely at the narrative role of such lore in matters such as socialization and gender. And they unravel the complex mix of mass media, commodification, and popular culture that today puts old spirits into new contexts.

The Ghost That Closed Down The Town written by Arthur Goldstuck and has been published by Penguin Random House South Africa this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-02 with Religion categories.

Arthur Goldstuck made the world of South African urban legends his own with four best-sellers during the 1990s. Now he returns to this landscape, but from a very different angle: looking at the extent to which ghost stories are really urban legends - stories spread by word of mouth (and the media) as absolute truth, but falling short on evidence and reality. In exploring ghost stories as urban legends, Goldstuck makes a fascinating discovery: the ghostly beliefs of each culture across South Africa have had a profound impact on the supernatural beliefs of every other cultural group in the country over the past four centuries. The result is the story of the South African ghost: a unique and complex character that reflects a turbulent history and a harsh existence and sheds a fascinating light on the nature of supernatural experience throughout the world. For instance, what do the Flying Dutchman and the Uniondale Ghost have in common? Why do the ghosts of so many of the country's fallen soldiers wander the earth seeking their forbidden lovers? How do our religious beliefs affect the way we see ghosts? How many ghosts of Daisy de Melker are really out there? Arthur Goldstuck has some of the answers in a book that challenges much conventional thinking about the supernatural.

The Believing Brain is bestselling author Michael Shermer's comprehensive and provocative theory on how beliefs are born, formed, reinforced, challenged, changed, and extinguished. In this work synthesizing thirty years of research, psychologist, historian of science, and the world's best-known skeptic Michael Shermer upends the traditional thinking about how humans form beliefs about the world. Simply put, beliefs come first and explanations for beliefs follow. The brain, Shermer argues, is a belief engine. From sensory data flowing in through the senses, the brain naturally begins to look for and find patterns, and then infuses those patterns with meaning. Our brains connect the dots of our world into meaningful patterns that explain why things happen, and these patterns become beliefs. Once beliefs are formed the brain begins to look for and find confirmatory evidence in support of those beliefs, which accelerates the process of reinforcing them, and round and round the process goes in a positive-feedback loop of belief confirmation. Shermer outlines the numerous cognitive tools our brains engage to reinforce our beliefs as truths. Interlaced with his theory of belief, Shermer provides countless real-world examples of how this process operates, from politics, economics, and religion to conspiracy theories, the supernatural, and the paranormal. Ultimately, he demonstrates why science is the best tool ever devised to determine whether or not a belief matches reality.
