For centuries much of the Christian community has interpreted the teachings of Jesus to say: 1 Divorce is absolutely not permitted, or at best, is permitted only in the case of admitted or proven adultery, 2 A divorced person is not allowed to marry again, 3 A divorced person who does marry again live in adultery, 4 A divorced person cannot be ordained as a deacon or a minster. Every on of these beliefs could be wrong. The first three are contrary to Mosaic Law and are based on scripture in which Jesus did not even use the Greek word for "divorce" (apostasion); the fourth is based on scripture in which Paul did not use it. We must move from a judgmental attitude toward divorced people to a redemptive attitude. This study is an outgrowth of an article I wrote entitled, Divorce, the Law, and Jesus. Publication of that article brought about a staggering number of requests for more information. "Divorce, a Gift of God's Love." Yes, a gift of God's love! After a 25 year struggle with the content as well as the title of this study, a dear lady and her husband in Texas convinced me that her divorce was, indeed, a gift from God. Her church didn't see it that way. Neither does mine. Yours probably does not, either.
