An entertaining guide for girls on how to make the world into their workshop—with screen-free, hands-on activities for independent exploration, making, building, and play. The Girl’s Guide to Building a Fort shows girls and their grown-ups how to knock down the four walls holding them in and transform each day into a canvas for play and adventure. This illustrated, information-packed guide is for Hands-On Girls, girls who want to fix things, make things, and learn more about the world around them. The book contains two sticker pages and dozens of activities, projects, and games—many of which can be done in 30 minutes or less with materials you already have in and around your home—and fun and interesting information on everything from how to spot constellations and change a bike tire to how to make your own jerky and what to do if you get lost in the woods. It’s the must-have book for anyone, big or little, who’s ready to learn new skills, get a little dirty, and reconnect with the whimsical, gutsy girl in each of us.

During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The WPA Guide to Georgia describes the rich historical and cultural background of America’s Peach State. With varied and interesting photos, the guide gives readers a real taste as to what sweet southern living was like in the 1940’s, all the way from the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains down to the roaring Mississippi River valley.

The most beautiful of America's fifty statehouses, the Louisiana capitol in Baton Rouge ranks second behind the New Orleans Superdome as the state's leading tourist attraction-and this comprehensive guidebook shows why. Constructed in 1932 under the reign of Huey Long at a cost of only $5 million, the thirty-four-story tower houses some of the most impressive examples of art deco architecture in America. A companion work to Pelican's lavish pictorial volume, The Louisiana Capitol, published in 1977, this book is an ideal in-hand guide for on-site observation, appreciation, and understanding of the capitol's art and history.

A chance sailing trip with a friend from work led me to wonder if I could learn to sail. After all, I’m a woman, and the sailing world seems to favor men. I am not athletic; I didn’t grow up in a family where we learned about boating; I would be starting late, since I was in my thirties; and I suffer from seasickness. What I discovered over the next twenty-five years is that I could indeed learn to be a competent sailor. But I didn’t expect to be an expert overnight. Instead, as a novice, I layered on new knowledge slowly, over time, through experiential learning. This book describes the process whereby this happened. Using examples from trips along the coast of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, it reviews the essential knowledge needed to be a sailor as well as explanations about the parts of a sailboat, major boat systems, and tasks associated with maintaining a sailboat. It also discusses some Zen-like attitudes that lead to successful and fun sailing, such as focusing, the no-blame rule, and stripping down to the essentials. Unlike some other sailing guides, this book points out that sailing can be a lifestyle that includes many dimensions. It’s not just about getting a boat to sail. Traveling by boat is a unique experience, and visiting small coastal New England communities is an adventure. Learning about history, art, ecology, star constellations, technology, and birds are only a few of the kinds of activities that can be built into a rich and rewarding sailing experience. This book will be helpful for people who would like to learn to sail but who are intimidated by the process, particularly women, fledgling sailors just starting out, and families with children.
