Venture capital (VC) is the business of financing the new—and making outsized profits. It grew up in Silicon Valley, backing the most influential companies known today, including Apple and Airbnb. It’s not the iPhone, but VC, that is Silicon Valley’s greatest export—it’s the key ingredient of innovation, and provides the toolkit for inventors and startup founders around the world to become powerful, multi-billion-dollar companies. Once other countries learned how to finance risky startups, they could unlock their own innovative energies. And where is VC placing its bets today? The answer is: everywhere. China. India. Israel. Brazil. Planet VC uncovers the story of how VC went global, transforming cities from Beijing to Bangalore into the techno-hubs of tomorrow. Authors Terrance Philips and Jame DiBiasio follow the money to understand how VC helped enable the rise of America’s global competitors, and where the world of innovation is headed next. What sectors or technologies are VCs backing in different parts of the world? How does VC work in countries as different as China and India? How do governments influence the funding of innovation? And how is technology, from blockchain to the metaverse, changing the nature of VC? By exploring these questions, through in-depth interviews with the people who pioneered venture investing around the world as well as with today’s industry leaders, Planet VC provides a unique and useful framework for understanding the future of global innovation.

Venture capital (VC) has had a profound impact on the U.S and world economies. The landmarks of venture capitalism are the formation of the venture capital fund ARD in 1946 and the establishment of small business investment companies by the U.S. Small Business Administration in 1958. After a boom in the 1960s, the VC industry all but collapsed between 1970 and 1977. The VC industry revived in the 1980s and reached a peak in 1987 from which it declined. At the moment of its decline in 1990, the industry was radically altered and transformed and was at a crossroads from its recent shake-out. This book examines the state of the VC industry at this point in 1990, examining current trends, developments, and practices, and looking at future prospects for the industry, suppliers, and users of risk capital, as well as the nation's economy as a whole. The VC industry has been transformed by two changes. (1) New and specialized financial and investment strategies emphasize deal making, transaction crafting and closing, fee generating, and short-term gains. This "merchant capital" approach is oriented to investing in established firms, as opposed to the classic VC approach of providing equity financing in new, emerging, innovating, and technology-based firms. This change may be due to professionals entering the field from MBA backgrounds rather than business-building backgrounds. (2) The altered market has resulted in reduced opportunities, globalization, increase in available capital, and dominance of institutional money, and the VC industry is losing its classic company-building skills. The major virtue of the traditional VC industry, which has been a wellspring of innovation and great rewards, is the skills brought by the venture capitalists that add value in the firm's forming, building, and harvesting. Changes in the VC industry are seen in an explosion of investing activity, heterogeneity of industry structure, niche funds, declines in rate of return, and increased competition and shake-out. Examples of classic revolutionary industries financed by VC are the semiconductor, computer, and biotechnology industries. Some lessons from these industries are drawn. Lessons are also drawn from the case of the Winchester disc-drive industry, which represents a case of "capital market myopia." Historical VC returns have been in the 10% to 20% range, occasionally in the 20% to 30% range, and rarely higher. The main reason for the unsatisfactory returns on VC since 1983 has been the initial public offering (IPO) drought. The benefits and implications for the VC industry of syndicated investments are examined. The contribution of VC to economic development is explored in terms of internal and external factors. Some high-tech regions were not planned; some planned regional centers have failed. Three factors affect the flow of VC: investors who put up the money, entrepreneurs who form the company, and the venture capitalists. The value-added of classic VC investment lies in the guidance, contracts, know-how, and support of the backers. The relationship between the venture capitalist and management team critically affects the success of the venture. Also examined are relationships between flows of VC and public policy, capital markets, new technologies, and changes in industries. Most important in fostering VC are government policies. Since VC is vital element to entrepreneurship, the U.S. must actively foster classic venture capital by changing some national attitudes and policies in culture, education, and role of government, for which recommendations and suggestions are offered. "Many interesting developments have occurred in the world of venture capital since the publication of the first edition of this book in 2006, which prompted us to revise the book for the second edition. While the organization of the book remains unchanged, many of the chapters are substantially rewritten. For example, in Chapter 5, we re-ranked top VC firms, incorporating the latest performance statistics, fundraising and investment activities, notable exits, and (as always) our subjective opinions. In Chapter 6, we examine further evidence of the deepening globalization of the industry. In Chapters 3, 4, and 7,we analyze the impact of the 1999-2000 Internet bubble years on the VC risk and returns, as investments made in those years are finally mature and thus now a part of the performance evaluation analysis. We also incorporated expositional improvements throughout the book based on reader feedback on the first edition. Another feature of the new edition is that the VCV model, used extensively in Part III of the book, is now available as a Web-based application available on http://VCVtools.com. Significant collaborative efforts went into developing this tool, which we believe will be of interest to a broad audience, including practitioners interested in valuing VC-backed company stocks and employee stock options"

The new playbook for innovation and startup success is emerging from beyond Silicon Valley--at the "frontier." Startups have changed the world. In the United States, many startups, such as Tesla, Apple, and Amazon, have become household names. The economic value of startups has doubled since 1992 and is projected to double again in the next fifteen years. For decades, the hot center of this phenomenon has been Silicon Valley. This is changing fast. Thanks to technology, startups are now taking root everywhere, from Delhi to Detroit to Nairobi to Sao Paulo. Yet despite this globalization of startup activity, our knowledge of how to build successful startups is still drawn primarily from Silicon Valley. As venture capitalist Alexandre Lazarow shows in this insightful and instructive book, this Silicon Valley "gospel" is due for a refresh--and it comes from what he calls the "frontier," the growing constellation of startup ecosystems, outside of the Valley and other major economic centers, that now stretches across the globe. The frontier is a truly different world where startups often must cope with political or economic instability and lack of infrastructure, and where there might be little or no access to angel investors, venture capitalists, or experienced employee pools. Under such conditions, entrepreneurs must be creators who build industries rather than disruptors who change them because there are few existing businesses to disrupt. The companies they create must be global from birth because local markets are too small. They focus on resiliency and sustainability rather than unicorn-style growth at any cost. With rich and wide-ranging stories of frontier innovators from around the world, Out-Innovate is the new playbook for innovation--wherever it has the potential to happen.

The venture capital and private equity industries are among the most characteristic and visible segments of today's global economy. As we approach the midpoint of the first decade of the 21st century, these industries have clearly matured and left behind the much-publicized excesses of the 1990s. It is now incumbent upon practitioners to thoroughly understand the legal structure of venture capital transactions, not only in their own country but also'due to the typically cross-border nature of such transactions'in numerous jurisdictions worldwide. This very useful book has been prepared under the auspices of the International Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA) following a working session held in Edinburgh in August 2003. It provides practitioners with the first overview of the legal requirements attached to venture capital transactions in a variety of jurisdictions, encompassing both developed and developing nations. An introductory chapter presents a global view, addressing venture capital issues that tend to arise under any legal circumstances. Then, for each of twelve countries, an experienced practitioner in the venture capital field offers detailed discussions of his or her country's legal system as it pertains to the protection of investors' rights and company's investments, regulatory issues, and enforcement. Specific topics discussed where applicable for each country include: documentation; due diligence; valuation standards; representations and warranties; intellectual property; compensation of key personnel; disclosure; exit strategy; corporate governance roles; tax issues; securities law requirements; restrictions on foreign direct investment; and availability of court orders. Global Venture Capital Transactions goes a long way to fulfilling the need of practitioners and entrepreneurs to structure cross-border venture capital transactions that are not only initially successful but enjoy continued profitability with the strength to overcome inevitable obstacles. It will be warmly welcomed by the venture capital and private equity community throughout the world.

Many warn that the next stage of globalization--the offshoring of research and development to China and India--threatens the foundations of Western prosperity. But in The Venturesome Economy, acclaimed business and economics scholar Amar Bhidé shows how wrong the doomsayers are. Using extensive field studies on venture-capital-backed businesses to examine how technology really advances in modern economies, Bhidé explains why know-how developed abroad enhances--not diminishes--prosperity at home, and why trying to maintain the U.S. lead by subsidizing more research or training more scientists will do more harm than good. When breakthrough ideas have no borders, a nation's capacity to exploit cutting-edge research regardless of where it originates is crucial: "venturesome consumption"--the willingness and ability of businesses and consumers to effectively use products and technologies derived from scientific research--is far more important than having a share of such research. In fact, a venturesome economy benefits from an increase in research produced abroad: the success of Apple's iPod, for instance, owes much to technologies developed in Asia and Europe. Many players--entrepreneurs, managers, financiers, salespersons, consumers, and not just a few brilliant scientists and engineers--have kept the United States at the forefront of the innovation game. As long as their venturesome spirit remains alive and well, advances abroad need not be feared. Read The Venturesome Economy and learn why--and see how we can keep it that way.
