A rollicking guided tour of one extraordinary summer, when some of the most pivotal and freakishly coincidental stories all collided and changed the way we think about modern sports The summer of 1984 was a watershed moment in the birth of modern sports when the nation watched Michael Jordan grow from college basketball player to professional athlete and star. That summer also saw ESPN's rise to media dominance as the country's premier sports network and the first modern, commercialized, profitable Olympics. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird's rivalry raged, Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe reigned in tennis, and Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon made pro wrestling a business, while Donald Trump pierced the national consciousness as a pro football team owner. It was an awakening in the sports world, a moment when sports began to morph into the market-savvy, sensationalized, moneyed, controversial, and wildly popular arena we know today. In the tradition of Bill Bryson's One Summer: America, 1927, L. Jon Wertheim captures these 90 seminal days against the backdrop of the nostalgia-soaked 1980s, to show that this was the year we collectively traded in our ratty Converses for a pair of sleek, heavily branded, ingeniously marketed Nikes. This was the year that sports went big-time.

2017 Finalist for Literary Fiction, Foreword Reviews Best Fiction Books of 2017 by Chicago Review of Books One of 19 Books You Should Read This September by Chicago Review of Books The small plains town of Ingleside, Nebraska, is populated by down-on-their-luck ranchers and new money, ghosts and seers, drugs and greed, the haves and the have-nots. Lives ripple through each other to surprising effect, though the connections fluctuate between divisive gulfs and the most intimate closeness. At the center of this novel is the story of Teensy and his daughter, Luann, who face the loss of their land even as they mourn the death of Luann's mother. On the other end of the spectrum, some townspeople find enormous wealth when developers begin buying up acreages. When Glory Days--an amusement park--is erected, past and present collide, the attachment to the land is fully severed, and the invading culture ushers in even darker times. In Glory Days Melissa Fraterrigo combines gritty realism with magical elements to paint an arrestingly stark portrait of the painful transitions of twenty-first-century, small-town America. She interweaves a slate of gripping characters to reveal deeper truths about our times and how the new landscape of one culture can be the ruin of another. Read the author's discussion guide.

Life has a way of taking the life out of us. Often we go through situations where the challenge seems so much greater than our strength. During such times, we can find hope and inspiration from the story of Joshua. God had called Joshua to take over from Moses and lead the Israelites into a paradigm shift from wilderness wandering to promise-believing. In Canaan, they would not fight for victory but fight from victory. God had a Promised Land in store for them, but they had to grasp that reality, change their mindsets, and take action to receive it. The same is true for us today. God is telling us that our best days—our “glory days”—are still ahead of us. We only need to grasp that truth and live in faith to realize this promise. This six-session video Bible study (DVD/digital video sold separately) includes leader helps, discussion questions, conversation starters, and between-session activities to enhance your understanding and application of Max’s teaching. Sessions include: These Days Are Your Glory Days Inherit Your Inheritance Walk Circles Around Jericho Pray Audacious Prayers No Falling Words God Fights for You Designed for use with Glory Days Video Study (sold separately).

A few weeks after my mother, Gloria Winifred Foley (Glory, nee Cavanagh), passed away I was filled with equal measures of excitement and trepidation when I discovered her stash of audio cassette tapes. Glory's taping included Adrian (Ade, her husband) and others recounting people and events of days long gone. These tapes were well on their way to being lost. My efforts to make sure that did not happen was the start of a family history adventure!Subjects include Ade's ancestors as some of the first settlers of Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia; his family's involvement in the early development of the Melbourne suburb of Kew; and his life and work in the Victorian timber mills, including a stint as fireman on the Climax steam engine now housed in the Puffing Billy Railway Museum. Glory's side of the family is also covered, particularly their role as pioneers in Monto, Queensland; and their farming experiences, including the unique challenges of grazing cattle on Fraser Island. Stories include humorous anecdotes about characters, and reflections on how times have changed. These recordings are made more accessible and searchable by providing them in printed and electronic form, including links to audio and video files as well as transcriptions. Notes provide clarifications and more information, frequently with images and links to online resources. Related stories are included from newspapers, as well as diary entries, jottings, poems, music, songs, video clips, and other miscellanea. Timelines and family trees have been included as a guide to understanding events and where people in the stories fit into the extended family.Glory saw what we could not - that the stories, personalities, and the times, would be of interest to future generations. In other words, these recordings are a family - and historical - treasure!

You love to paint but Christian meetings fill up all your free time. You could cut it as a professional sportsperson but think missionary work might be a better use of your life. You're interested in party politics but worry that it's not much of a spiritual pastime. Many believers subconsciously divide their lives into Christian activities (church, prayer, Bible study and evangelism) and everything else - the glory bits and the rest. Julian Hardyman shows that God is just as interested in our work and family, our hobbies and skills, our politics and sporting prowess, as the things we think of as spiritual.Living the whole of our lives for Jesus doesn't mean denying our God-given human interests. By rediscovering the liberating teaching of Genesis we can see how God intends every part of our personality to be lived for his glory. Glory Days will sharpen our senses, awaken our dormant creativity and help us reclaim vast areas of our life for Jesus. Ultimately it will show us that even the most ordinary days can be glory days.

Sport Memory And Nationhood In Japan written by Andreas Niehaus and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-13 with Sports & Recreation categories.

This book clarifies and verifies the role sport has as an alternative marker in understanding and mapping memory in Japan, by applying the concept of lieux de mémoire (realms of memory) to sport in Japan. Japanese history and national construction have not been short of sports landmarks since the end of the nineteenth century. Western-style sports were introduced into Japan in order to modernize the country and develop a culture of consciousness about bodies resembling that of the Western world. Japan’s modernization has been a process of embracing Western thought and culture while at the same time attempting to establish what distinguishes Japan from the West. In this context, sports functioned as sites of contested identities and memories. The Olympics, baseball and soccer have produced memories in Japan, but so too have martial arts, which by their very name signify an attempt to create traditions beyond Western sports. Because modern sports form bodies of modern citizens and, at the same time, offer countless opportunities for competition with other nations, they provide an excellent ground for testing and contesting national identifications. By revealing some of the key realms of memory in the Japanese field of sports, this book shows how memories and counter-memories of (sport) moments, places, and heroes constitute an inventory for identity. This book was originally published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

Keep walking. This may be the day your Jericho walls come down. We all face them. Strongholds with a strong hold on our lives. Roadblocks to our joy. Obstacles in our marriages. Fortresses of fear blocking us from peace. How can we bring down these walls that keep us from the future God promises? Remember the story of Joshua and the battle of Jericho? Those were some formidable foes and big barriers. Max Lucado says the book of Joshua is in the bible to remind us of one thing: God Fights For Us! We can overcome, because He has already overcome. We were not made to stand in the shadow of our walls and quake. We were made to stand on top of Jericho's rubble and conquer. We win, because God's already won. Need a new battle plan for life? Keep walking, keep believing. These may be your Glory Days.

Winner of the Western Writers of America’s Medicine Pipe Bearer’s Award Tall, vain, elegant, the Crow were perhaps the most handsome of the Plains tribes. They were superb horsemen and fierce mystic warriors, implacable enemies, unshakable friends. A French-Canadian trapper, Renee DeGeer was a loner before he came to the Crow. He became one of them when he married the beautiful Tall Willow, only daughter of the principal chief, and started their magnificent family. But all too soon they and the whole Whistling Water clan found themselves in a fight to the death with other tribes competing for dwindling land and facing a white culture that threatened to overwhelm them like a river in flood. Now, as surely as the sun must set, the glory days of noble warriors and roaming hunters were coming to an end. THE GLORY DAYS OF BUFFALO EGBERT A magnificent novel that brings to life the moving story of the Crow nation “A must read. If you haven’t yet read it, get it. It’s a fine reading experience.” —Allan W. Eckert, author of That Dark and Bloody River
