Excerpt from The Gospel Woes These Sermons were preached on the Sun day mornings in Lent, 1890, in the Mission Church of S. John the Evangelist, Boston. They have been subsequently written out for publication in the hope that they may suggest helpful thoughts for meditation on one aspect of our Lord's teaching, an aspect to which our time would seem to give less than its due prominence. With the exception of S. Mat thew xxiv. 19, all the Woes pronounced by our Lord, as recorded by the different Evan gelists, are considered in these Sermons. In them, as in other publications, the author is much more largely indebted to others' thoughts than he has often been able to ao knowledge. Excerpt from The Problem of the Fourth Gospel If I venture the following personal explanation, the reason is simply and solely this: I have been advised clearly to define the relations between the present volume and a little work of mine which, published about a dozen years ago, was entitled The Fourth Gospel and some recent German Criticism. Let me accordingly inform the reader that, when asked for a second edition of a work which - so, at all events, people were good enough to tell me - had served a useful purpose, I was for some time loth to acquiesce in such altogether unexpected but certainly encouraging suggestions. It was, indeed, far from being the case that, because the fates had determined that I should stray into Synoptic fields and the region of Eschatological research, I had therefore ceased to be fascinated by the Johannine literature en masse, and in particular by the very noble treatise which bears the name of 'John'; on the contrary, I had actually betaken myself to what bade fair to be a prolonged and laborious attempt to trace connecting links between the 'Schmerzenskind der Theologie' (as Pfleiderer calls the Fourth Gospel) and that great writing of - may I say it? - uncertain provenance which is designated 'The Epistle to the Ephesians.' My hesitation was, of course, partly due to natural reluctance even temporarily to forsake a work which was already rising on the stocks; it was, however, mainly grounded in a difficulty which stared me in the face. To put the matter in a nut-shell: I was speedily compelled to realize that, were any action taken in response to the aforesaid kindly suggestions, it would mean that time must be found for the drastic re-writing of a work which I could but turn to with added dissatisfaction and no small measure of dissent. Mere revision was not to be thought of. Somehow or other time has been found - or rather made; and in the event the present volume arrives at its completion. Excerpt from The Gospel of Jesus and the Problems of Democracy The man who to-day proclaims the Gospel of Jesus in the spirit of his Master must expect misunderstand ing, abuse and perhaps persecution. Why not? Shall the disciple be above his Master? Still in heaven's name the deeds of hell are done Still on the high-road, 'neath the noonday sun The fires of hate are lit for them who dare Follow their Lord along the untrodden way. I am not suprised or disquieted, therefore, that I am accused of being a dangerous heretic. And it is with no expectation of getting rid of that reputation that I here protest that I have no quarrel with ortho doxy. The kernel of it I believe to be truth, as firmly as the most orthodox. I find nothing false in it, save that kind of falsity which results from a lay ing of the emphasis in the wrong place. The change of emphasis that I urge, from the metaphysics of Paul to the ethics of Jesus, involves such a difference of perspective, such a readjustment of magnitudes and values, as appears like heresy to the more conservative. But after a time they will learn to make the adjust ment, and will perceive that nothing valued by the old orthodoxy has been lost, though its form may have been not a little altered. Excerpt from The Gospel Problems and Their Solution: Being an Inquiry Into the Origin of the Four Gospels I was in the first instance led to write on the subject dealt with in this book by a sentence or two in an article by Professor J. T. Marshall in the Critical Review for July, 1892. Ever since I was a boy I had had, in common with all who have devoted much attention to the critical study of the Bible, a keen desire to know in what manner the four Gospels had come into existence. I had long felt that all current theories were inadequate; and I had, moreover, a vague impression that at least some portions of the Gospel narratives were written contemporaneously with the events they record. Several years ago this impression was strengthened by a statement which I read somewhere that the art of writing shorthand was practised in the times of the New Testament. But the impression took no definite shape, and I continued to be puzzled by those features of the Gospels which throughout this century have been a leading subject of discussion in the learned world. It was not until I read, soon after its appearance, the article above referred to, that I found the first clue to the solution of the Problems. Excerpt from Gospel Origins: A Study of the Synoptic Problem The chapters which make up this little book are so many studies in the Synoptic Problem. The author makes no claim to originality in dealing with this question. He has made full use of the minute research and laborious work of those who have preceded him but he has tried to carry their work on to a further stage in endeavouring to define more closely than they have done the sources used by the three evangelists. In doing, so he has given the fullest consideration to the many different theories advanced by modern scholars, and in consequence, though it cannot be claimed that this work is a Handbook on the subject with which it deals, yet the hope is cherished that students will be able, in following the line of thought advanced, to bring into view the several positions taken up by those who have attempted a solution. Excerpt from The Jesus Problem: A Restatement of the Myth Theory As was explained in the preamble to the historical jesus that work was offered as prolegomena to a concise restatement of the theory that the Gospel Jesus is a mythical construction. That theory had been dis cursively expounded by the writer in two large volumes, christianity and mythology and pagan christs, and summarily in A short history OF christianity, the argument in the two former combining a negative criticism of the New Testament narrative with an exposition of the myth-evidence. Criticism having in large part taken the form of a denial that the records were unhistorical, it was necessary to clear the ground by showing that all the various attempts of the past generation to find in the gospels a historical residuum have entirely failed to meet critical tests. Those attempts, conflicting as they do with each other, and collapsing as they do in themselves, give undesigned support to the conclusion that the gospel story is without historic basis. Excerpt from The Gospel According to St. Mark: With Introduction and Notes IN entering upon a study of one of the Gospels, it is important to distinguish between the book itself and the problems to which it gives rise. The book, together with the in uence it has had over the mind, the heart, the will of men, constitutes a fact. So long as we deal with this fact we are dealing with certainties, and the essential preliminary to any effective criticism of a Gospel - considera tion of its sources, authorship, and date, its historical value, its relation to other Gospels - is to see the fact itself as clearly as may be, to let the book speak for itself. The fact first, its meaning and worth later: in the former investigation we try to see what indubitably is, in the latter to exercise judgment upon problems still in the region of debate and uncertainty. Hence this brief Introduction will look first at the book itself - its subject, contents, and characteristics; then at the main problems which gather round it. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
