Displacement is a fundamental property of grammar. Typically, when an occurrence moves it is pronounced in only one environment. This was previously viewed as a primitive/irreducible property of grammar. Recent work, however, suggests that it follows from principled interactions between the syntactic and phonological components of grammar. As such, the phonetic character of movement chains can be seen as both a reflection of and probe into the syntax-phonology interface. This volume deals with repetition, an atypical outcome of movement operations in which displaced elements are pronounced multiple times. Although cross-linguistically rare, the phenomenon obtains robustly in Nupe, a Benue-Congo language of Nigeria. Repetition raises a tension of the descriptive-explanatory variety. In order to achieve both measures of adequacy, movement theory must be supplemented with an account of the conditions that drive and constrain multiple pronunciation. This book catalogs these conditions, bringing to light a number of undocumented aspects of Nupe grammar.

Most scholars define reduplication as a formally restricted grammatical process, neatly distinguishing it from 'mere' repetition as a discoursal option. However, there is a fuzzy grey area between the two processes that has rarely been explored so far. In this timely collection, the phenomenon of exact repetition, understood broadly as the systematic iteration of one and the same linguistic item within relatively close syntactic proximity, is investigated from a number of angles. The volume contains studies from phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, and deals with a broad range of languages, including alleged 'reduplication avoiders'. In bringing together different theoretical perspectives, phenomenological domains, and methodologies, and in linking the fields of syntax and discourse to those of morphology and morphophonology, the volume provides new insights into the structure and meaning of exact repetition phenomena, and, more generally, into their status within a theory of language. The collection will appeal to formally and functionally oriented scholars from all subfields of linguistics, including typology.

THE number of Greek Grammars published during the last few years has been so great, and so many of them seem admirably suited for the purpose they have in view-the teaching of Greek to beginners-that a great deal of an unfortunate schoolmaster's time is taken up in deciding upon their respective merits, and in making up his mind which to adopt for school use. This being the case, the author of any new grammar must expect his work to be judged, not merely with reference to the question whether the book is good in itself, but whether, tested by the standard reached by other grammars already in use, it contains special excellencies of its own. Father Kleist, in publishing his translation of Kaegi's Greek Grammar, was perfectly well aware of this fact, and claims as his justification that Kaegi's work is the successful result of a very close and accurate study of the Greek authors generally read in a school course, conducted with this special purpose of either omitting entirely or of relegating to an unimportant place in his Grammar all peculiarities or irregularities rarely met with in these authors. To have done this successfully, as we believe he has, is a strong recommendation for his book. The work met with a very favorable reception in Germany, passing through twelve editions in ten years. Such a reception in the land of grammarians speaks for itself. While, then, we have much pleasure in welcoming this translation by Father Kleist, we should like to point out what appear to us slight defects in the book. It would have been clearer, we think, to have treated the accentuation of the verb by itself without reference to the noun; nor is anything gained by leaving out the dual number in the ordinary conjugation of the verb, and giving it a place by itself; to a boy it will probably prove more difficult than the usual arrangement. Again, see page 132 to illustrate the meaning of the future perfect active, it would, perhaps, have been well to have included it among the peculiar tense forms on p. 67. On the whole, too, we are inclined to think that the treatment of hypothetical sentences, by which they are first classified according to time, and then, if past or present, by their fulfillment or non-fulfillment; and, if future, by their greater or less vividness, will prove more intelligible to beginners than that adopted in this grammar; still, it is but fair to add that the treatment given here is clearer than that to be met with in most Greek grammars. The usages of the infinitive and of the negatives might, with advantage, have been explained a little more fully; nothing, for example, is said of the use by dramatic poets... with the second person singular of the future indicative to denote a strong prohibition. The accusative of the agent after verbals... although not a common construction, might have been mentioned, as it is found in Plato, Thucydides and Xenophon. We venture to think, too, that two pages at the beginning of the book, giving a brief account of the Greek language and its dialects, and a short chapter at the end on Greek metres, would have enhanced its value. Apart from these slight defects, we can thoroughly recommend this grammar for its clearness, its orderly arrangement, and its judicious repression of irrelevant matter. There is also published a translation of an exercise book by the same author, to be used pari passu with the grammar, adding very greatly to the value of the latter. -The Dublin Review, Part 1

Excerpt from A Short Grammar of Classical Greek: With Tables for Repetition This long protracted labor put a vast amount of grammatical matter at the disposal of the author, and as he correctly thought that the teaching of grammar must be subservient to, and determined by, the reading-matter, be either omitted all the peculiarities and irregularities which are seldom met with in classical authors, or marked them by small print, or put them in special notes or chapters for reference. This book explores how experienced authors repeat word forms in three different genres: research articles, short stories and political speeches. Methods from corpus linguistics are used to elicit all the repeated word forms in each text and then the material is analysed to establish the nature of the repetitions. The analysis seeks answers to the questions: in what naming complexes are the words repeated; is the same concept evoked; is the referential type repeated; are there metaphoric, pragmatic or other shifts in the meaning of the word? Taxonomy of repetition types is evolved which leads to conclusions about the role of repetition in creating coherent texts. The book provides evidence that repetitions amount to about 60% of the words in a text and they form groups of chains typical for each genre. Thus the way words are repeated serves to create the skeleton of a genre. Comparisons show that in texts written by inexperienced authors the repetitions are considerably fewer than in the work of the experienced ones. The study also reveals which types of repetition decrease the quality of the text. Specific applications of the theory are suggested for assessing the quality of a text, creating short summaries and building good texts in the respective genres. The study is placed within the framework of discourse studies of lexical repetitions and presents a brief non-technical description of the linguistic field. Inasmuch as the issue of how words relate to objects in reality is one of the criteria for assessing the repetitions, an overview is given and the analysis elicits specific reference types.
