The Great American Stickup written by Robert Scheer and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-07 with Business & Economics categories.

In The Great American Stickup, celebrated journalist Robert Scheer uncovers the hidden story behind one of the greatest financial crimes of our time: the Wall Street financial crash of 2008 and the consequent global recession. Instead of going where other journalists have gone in search of this story -- the board rooms and trading floors of the big Wall Street firms -- Scheer goes back to Washington, D.C., a veritable crime scene, beginning in the 1980s, where the captains of the finance industry, their lobbyists and allies among leading politicians destroyed an American regulatory system that had been functioning effectively since the era of the New Deal. This is a story largely forgotten or overlooked by the mainstream media, who wasted more than two decades with their boosterish coverage of Wall Street. Scheer argues that the roots of the disaster go back to the free-market propaganda of the Reagan years and, most damagingly, to the bipartisan deregulation of the banking industry undertaken with the full support of "progressive" Bill Clinton. In fact, if this debacle has a name, Scheer suggests, it is the "Clinton Bubble," that era when the administration let its friends on Wall Street write legislation that razed decades of robust financial regulation. It was Wall Street and Democratic Party darling Robert Rubin along with his clique of economist super-friends -- Alan Greenspan, Lawrence Summers, and a few others -- who inflated a giant real estate bubble by purposely not regulating the derivatives market, resulting in the pain and hardship millions are experiencing now. The Great American Stickup is both a brilliant telling of the story of the Clinton financial clique and the havoc it wrought -- informed by whistleblowers such as Brooksley Born, who goes on the record for Scheer -- and an unsparing anatomy of the American business and political class. It is also a cautionary tale: those who form the nucleus of the Clinton clique are now advising the Obama administration.

Coming To Our Senses written by Viki McCabe and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-03 with Psychology categories.

In Coming to Our Senses, cognitive scientist Viki McCabe argues that prevailing theories of perception, cognition, and information cannot explain how we know the world around us. Using scientific studies and true stories, McCabe shows that the ecological disasters, political paralysis, and economic failures we now face originate in our tendency to privilege cognitive processes and products over the information we access with our perceptual systems. As a result, we typically default to making decisions using inaccurate information such as mechanistic theories that reduce the world to extractable, exploitable parts. But the world does not function as an assembly of parts; it functions as a coalition of complex systems--from cells to cities--that organize and sustain themselves and cannot be partitioned and retain their purpose. McCabe also argues that we cannot describe such systems using theories and words. Instead, each system reveals itself in fractal-like geometric configurations that emerge from and reflect the structural organization that brings it into existence and determines its functions--a veritable physics of information. Thus, we comprehend phenomena as disparate as neural networks, river deltas, and economies by perceiving the branching geometry that organizes them into distribution systems. McCabe's key point is that form not only follows function, it doubles as information. If we put our theories aside and focus on the information the world displays, our perceptions can block hostile mental takeovers, reconnect us to reality, and bring us back to our senses.

The Stickup Kids written by Randol Contreras and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Social Science categories.

Randol Contreras came of age in the South Bronx during the 1980s, a time when the community was devastated by cuts in social services, a rise in arson and abandonment, and the rise of crack-cocaine. For this riveting book, he returns to the South Bronx with a sociological eye and provides an unprecedented insiderÕs look at the workings of a group of Dominican drug robbers. Known on the streets as ÒStickup Kids,Ó these men raided and brutally tortured drug dealers storing large amounts of heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and cash. As a participant observer, Randol Contreras offers both a personal and theoretical account for the rise of the Stickup Kids and their violence. He mainly focuses on the lives of neighborhood friends, who went from being crack dealers to drug robbers once their lucrative crack market opportunities disappeared. The result is a stunning, vivid, on-the-ground ethnographic description of a drug robberyÕs violence, the drug market high life, the criminal life course, and the eventual pain and suffering experienced by the casualties of the Crack Era. Provocative and eye-opening, The Stickup Kids urges us to explore the ravages of the drug trade through weaving history, biography, social structure, and drug market forces. It offers a revelatory explanation for drug market violence by masterfully uncovering the hidden social forces that produce violent and self-destructive individuals. Part memoir, part penetrating analysis, this book is engaging, personal, deeply informed, and entirely absorbing.

Americas leadership system and the wealthy patrons of gridlocked politicians exist within an alternate reality that is no longer tenable. Two parties purport a struggle between irreconcilable ideologies, but in truth, big money controls Washington, DC, lobbyists. Billionaires and pigs at the trough of our tax revenue set the agenda in Washington. While can-do innovation and productivity is evident on Main Street America, refusal to collaborate on national goals paralyzes our capital. Professionalism must replace the adversarial culture of our partisan system. Bad governance is made inevitable by pay-to-play politics, the elephant in the room that streetwise voters must push aside. But voters are confused or polarized. Finding the real story behind surface media reports is unnecessarily difficult today. The critical issues facing our society are ignored or deferred unconscionably by politicians. Lacking insights into this negligence, jeopardy for citizens grows more real day by day. We require understanding. Citizens must demand two overarching reforms to create a more vibrant, secure America: (1) rational governance through professionalism replacing our divisive partisan system, and (2) reformed mainstream media by FCC edict to provide voters with abundant, intelligent coverage of election issues, unimpeded by advertisers. A sophisticated electorate requires intellectual stimulation. Citizens need a forum for collaborative information activism, where voter understanding is facilitated by digital technology. Social media offers the opportunity to compare insights within a growing citizen community. Objective evidence disseminated over a cutting-edge website can revitalize Americas representative democracy. The power of knowledge in the hands of voters can compel politicians to start working professionally for rational governance and real progress in our capital. There is no time to waste.

They Know Everything About You written by Robert Scheer and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-24 with Political Science categories.

They Know Everything About You is a groundbreaking expos' of how government agencies and tech corporations monitor virtually every aspect of our lives, and a fierce defense of privacy and democracy. The revelation that the government has access to a vast trove of personal online data demonstrates that we already live in a surveillance society. But the erosion of privacy rights extends far beyond big government. Intelligence agencies such as the NSA and CIA are using Silicon Valley corporate partners as their data spies. Seemingly progressive tech companies are joining forces with snooping government agencies to create a brave new world of wired tyranny. Life in the digital age poses an unprecedented challenge to our constitutional liberties, which guarantee a wall of privacy between the individual and the government. The basic assumption of democracy requires the ability of the individual to experiment with ideas and associations within a protected zone, as secured by the Constitution. The unobserved moment embodies the most basic of human rights, yet it is being squandered in the name of national security and consumer convenience. Robert Scheer argues that the information revolution, while a source of public enlightenment, contains the seeds of freedom's destruction in the form of a surveillance state that exceeds the wildest dream of the most ingenious dictator. The technology of surveillance, unless vigorously resisted, represents an existential threat to the liberation of the human spirit.

In WE THE PEOPLE, A DOCTORS HANDBOOK ., Michael P Fangman M.D. gives the United States anything but a clean bill of health. In a far reaching commentary youll never hear on Meet the Press; medical problem-solving and common sense are compared to political patrimony in the face of dire systemic problems. The paralysis of Washington DC is exposed for what it is - Machiavellian greed and irresponsibility; flagrant denial that their broken partisan political system is threatening to kill our American way of life. He explains how leadership and accountability have been replaced in Washington DC by extremism and myopic ideology; insinuated with crony capitalism and seeking domination through polarized elections and money. We the People- who rely on DC to maintain a society where hard work should afford us our constitutions most basic goal, promotion of the The General Welfare, are increasingly irrelevant. The arrogance of todays leadership is unprecedented and must end. But his message is one of confidence that the wisdom, productivity, ethical standards and vitality of the American people can be harnessed and must prevail over partisan political corruption and crony capitalism. In the end, the Handbook shows the reader how WE THE PEOPLE can empower ourselves with knowledge and unity, to exercise our Constitutional rights and reshape our own future as a team.
