This is the extraordinary life story of Giovanni Belzoni - engineer, barber, monk, actor and circus strongman (where he later earned his title, The Great Belzoni) - who became one of the giants of 19th-century Egyptian archaeology. Sometimes maligned as a tomb robber, Giovanni Battista Belzoni is perhaps the most important and yet least remembered explorer and archaeologist of the 19th and 20th centuries. Giovanni Belzoni was the first person to penetrate the heart of the second pyramid at Giza and the first European to visit the oasis of Siwah and discover the ruined city of Berenice on the Red Sea. In 1823, at the age of 45, Belzoni died of fever trying to reach the mysterious city of Timbuktu.

This is the story of a strongman with grand ideas. Giovanni Batista Belzoni, a circus strongman who became the greatest archaeologist in the history of archaeology. He went to Egypt to irrigate its deserts, but became infatuated with their forgotten history. The techniques he used to remove the works of the Pharaohs were worthy in the eyes of the Pharaohs themselves. He raided their tombs, unlocked their ancient secrets, fought off would be assassins- with nothing more than his strength- and rivals, and filled an entire wing of the British Museum. But Belzoni died in relative obscurity while someone else, whose ambitions rivaling the giant, claimed the fame and recognition. In The Great Belzoni: History's Real Indiana Jones, you'll learn the answers to the following questions: How did Belzoni uncover the opening to the Great Temple of Abu Simbel? Why is he called The Great Belzoni? Why did he die in relative obscurity? Why is he condemned as a tomb robber and not praised as an archaeologist? How did he figure out how to move the Younger Memnon when others failed? What compelled him to go to Egypt? Why did his rivals want him dead? Why does the title of this book refer to Belzoni as History's Real Indiana Jones? Why he was more successful in finding tombs and entrances than the professionals? How did he discover the entrance to the Second Great Pyramid at Giza? Any many more! This book will help you understand why Giovanni Belzoni is important to the history of modern archaeology and Egypt. Many condemn Belzoni's tactics- working with the British and stripping Egypt of their historical roots- as amateurish and not of a professional; however, Belzoni wasn't a dumb brute, but a smart observant individual who discovered (and uncovered) the most beautiful pieces, tombs, and temple in Egyptian history. Whether you have an interest in archaeology, Egypt, mummies, tombs, Indiana Jones or know someone who wants to learn something new about the history of Egypt, then The Great Belzoni: History's Real Indiana Jones is the book for you!

The truly extraordinary life story of Giovanni Belzoni, one of the giants of 19th century Egyptian archaeology. Sometimes maligned as a tomb robber, Giovanni Battista Belzoni - engineer, barber, monk, actor and strongman in a circus, where he earned his title, 'The Great Belzoni' - is perhaps the most important and yet least remembered explorer and archaeologist of the last two hundred years. After a failed business venture in Egypt, attempting to sell a patent water wheel to the Pasha, he undertook one of the most ambitious archaeological projects ever. Under seeming impossible conditions, Belzoni transported the colossal granite head of Ramesses II from Thebes to England, where it is now one of the treasures of the British Museum. He went on to excavate the great temple of Abu Simbel, discover six major royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, including that of Seti I, and provide the British Museum with a spectacular collection of Egyptian antiquities. Giovanni Belzoni was the first person to penetrate the heart of the second pyramid at Giza and the first European to visit the oasis of Siwah and discover the ruined city of Berenice on the Red Sea. His exhibitions and best-selling memoirs made him a major celebrity in Regency London where he was a huge influence on the vogue for Egyptian style in art, design and architecture. In 1823, at the age of forty-five, Belzoni died of fever trying to reach the mysterious city of Timbuktu.

Giovanni Belzoni was among the first 19th century European explorers to visit Egypt and to a large extent he was responsible for the curiosity about Egypt's ancient history that was then growing in both Europe and America. Belzoni was 6' 8," a physical giant who in his youth had been a carnival performer lifting heavy weights thanks to his remarkable strength. Belzoni found himself in Egypt entirely through circumstance but once there he was paid by Henry Salt, the British Consul in Alexandria, to bring back antiquities. Few others could have done what he did, strongmen or otherwise. His first notable achievement was to affect the transport of a nine ton granite bust of the Pharaoh Ramses the Great to England. His next feat was to travel a thousand miles up the Nile to Abu Simbel in order to uncover the tomb of the great Ramses, the pharaoh of the New Kingdom who had raised Egypt to its greatest heights as the builder of its most important temples since the Pyramids of the Old Kingdom. Belzoni accomplished the discovery of Abu Simbel under physical conditions most of us could not even imagine. He climbed the enormous sand drift that ran from the Nile up hundreds of feet to the great carved reliefs on the cliff face above the river. The top of the sand drift blocked the entrance to the temple so Belzoni undertook to clear it away. Belzoni began shoveling the sand away himself -under a brilliant blue sky and a burning desert sun. The recorded temperature was 112 degrees. The locals had never seen a European do manual labor and certainly not at the height of the day. At first they were first astonished.... and then they were shamed by Belzoni's performance. In the end they joined him digging. Working together ovcr many punishing hours Belzoni and his companions gradually uncovered the long buried entrance to Abu Simbel.

The Italian son of a barber. A failed hydraulic engineer. A giant who performed feats of strength and agility in the circus. Giovanni Belzoni (1778–1824) was all of these before going on to become one of the most controversial figures in the history of Egyptian archaeology. A man of exceptional size with an ego of comparable proportions, he procured for the British Museum some of its largest and still awe-inspiring treasures. Today, however, the typical museum visitor knows nothing of Belzoni, and many modern archaeologists dismiss him as an ignorant vandal. In this captivating new biography, Ivor Noël Hume re-creates an early nineteenth century in which there was no established archaeological profession, only enormous opportunity. Belzoni landed in Egypt, where he was unsuccessful in selling a hydraulic machine of his own invention, and came under the patronage of diplomat Henry Salt, who convinced him to travel to Thebes in search of artifacts. Among the many treasures Belzoni would bring back was the seven-ton stone head of Ramesses II, the "Young Memnon." The book includes gripping accounts of Belzoni’s wildly productive, and physically brutal, expeditions, as well as an unforgettable portrait of his wife, Sarah, who suffered the hardships of the Egyptian deserts and later bore the brunt of the disillusionment that came with the declining popular perception of her husband. Including numerous illustrations, many in color, this volume brings one of archaeology’s most fascinating figures vividly to life.

No study of the modern exploration of ancient Egypt is complete without the extraordinary work of Giovanni Belzoni. Once a circus strongman, trained as an engineer, he spent many years abroad in Egypt and Nubia studying the ancient ruins and shipping antiquities back to Europe. Though once considered a tomb robber, recent re-evaluations of Belzoni have given him credit for his remarkably keen powers of observation and, for his time, careful excavation methods and recording. A larger-than-life character, Belzoni was a true adventurer-explorer during a time of nationalist competition between the European powers for the best antiquities. This exciting and detailed account of his two journeys to Egypt and Nubia is a treasure of Egyptology. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Among the noted explorers and adventurers of the great age of discovery, few can compare with the Great Belzoni. No study of the modern exploration of ancient Egypt is complete without his extraordinary work. Once a circus strongman, trained as an engineer, he spent many years on the Nile in Egypt and Nubia studying the ancient ruins and shipping antiquities back to Europe. Though once considered a tomb robber, recent re-evaluations of Belzoni have given him credit for his remarkably keen powers of observation and, for the Victorian period, careful excavation methods and recording. A larger-than-life character, Belzoni was a true adventurer-explorer during a time of nationalist competition between the European powers for the best antiquities. This exciting and detailed account of his two journeys to Egypt and Nubia is a treasure of Egyptology.
