THE GREAT BIG BOOK OF HAIKU: 365 Haiku Poems is a poetry anthology for adult readers. It is a satire on adulthood in that the older we get, the less we live life in the moment. The design of this text is such that there are 365 poems, one for every day of the year. Instead of writing a book of poems for children to read one each night at bedtime, they are for adults to read one each morning of the year upon waking up. Setting a vision for your day, you are now conscious of each moment you're participating in. A haiku poem is based on a single moment in time, and that's what gives it personality. This personality is what will inspire you to live more in the present. The structure of a haiku poem is short, only three lines, containing 5 syllables, then 7, and then 5 again. This addition and then subtraction of an even number using a base of odd numbers also reflects the moral of this story in that balance is thought of as a binary, but in life there are much more than only two sides. Each poem was written by starting with a brainstorm on the most intense moment of the day. Every day, for one year, I wrote down the most intense moment or moments I had. Positive and negative. I scrapbooked each card of moment(s) using keywords and images from magazines so that when I returned to them, I would have a lot of inspiration. Then, the following year, I turned them into haiku poems. This collection took more than two years to create, because after that I had to type them all up, edit them, and secure the rest of the book's structure. This anthology is my gift to every adult who seeks solace in the art of poetry.

In the past hundred years, haiku has gone far beyond its Japanese origins to become a worldwide phenomenon—with the classic poetic form growing and evolving as it has adapted to the needs of the whole range of languages and cultures that have embraced it. This proliferation of the joy of haiku is cause for celebration—but it can also compel us to go back to the beginning: to look at haiku’s development during the centuries before it was known outside Japan. This in-depth study of haiku history begins with the great early masters of the form—like Basho, Buson, and Issa—and goes all the way to twentieth-century greats, like Santoka. It also focuses on an important aspect of traditional haiku that is less known in the West: haiku art. All the great haiku masters created paintings (called haiga) or calligraphy in connection with their poems, and the words and images were intended to be enjoyed together, enhancing each other, and each adding its own dimension to the reader’s and viewer’s understanding. Here one of the leading haiku scholars of the West takes us on a tour of haiku poetry’s evolution, providing along the way a wealth of examples of the poetry and the art inspired by it.

This is the essential English edition of the complete poems of the eminent Japanese master of the haiku, Matsuo Bashō. Matsuo Bashō (1644–1694) is arguably the greatest figure in the history of Japanese literature and the master of the haiku. Bashō: The Complete Haiku of Matsuo Bashō offers in English a full picture of the haiku of Bashō, 980 poems in all. Andrew Fitzsimons’ translation is the first to adhere strictly to form: all of the poems are translated following the syllabic count of the originals. This book also translates a number of Bashō’s headnotes to poems ignored by previous English-language translators. In Fitzsimons’ beautiful rendering, Bashō is much more than a philosopher of the natural world and the leading exponent of a refined Japanese sensibility. He is also a poet of queer love and eroticism; of the city as well as the country, the indoors and the outdoors, travel and staying put; of lonesomeness as well as the desire to be alone. His poetry explores the full range of social experience in Edo Japan as he moved among friends and followers high and low, the elite and the demi-monde, the less fortunate: poor farmers, abandoned children, disregarded elders. Bashō: The Complete Haiku of Matsuo Bashō reveals how this work speaks to our concerns today as much as it captures a Japan emerging from the Middle Ages. For dedicated scholars and those coming upon Bashō for the first time, Fitzsimons’ elegant translation—with an insightful introduction and helpful notes—allows readers to enjoy these works in all their glory.

The book should engage the person interested in reading haiku poetry for pleasure as well as newcomers to the writing of haiku. Parts of the book allow for interaction with the author by interested haiku writers. The author presents in a scholarly way his research into haiku and its history, as well as its previous uses. He talks about haiku of today and for the future with ample references on haiku to be found in the literature. In so doing, he takes the reader on a poetical journey through his life, autobiographically speaking, which makes the book more interesting and human, and not pedantic. He uses his haiku to speak out on such topics as love, nature, war and peace, and 9/11. His poetry describes his years growing up in New York City during the Great Depression; his stint as a combat Marine in World War II; his college days at N.Y.U.; his Colorectal Cancer and how he deals with it; his work with HIV/AIDS, drugs, and severely disabled adults; his Buddhist inclinations and living in the now; his feelings about the destruction of the Twin Towers. Some of his poems will come across as therapeutic while others may be seen as cathartic.

Step into a series of dazzling, funny, melancholy, and joyous moments with this collection of haiku masterworks. Beloved translator Peter Beilenson's goal was twofold: to craft a book of haiku accessible to anyone, and to render his best guess at what the poets would have written in English. His translations preserve the sublime spirit of each verse, conjuring vivid visual and emotional impressions in spare words.Haiku icon Basho is represented amply here, as are imagery-virtuoso Buson and wry, warm, painfully human Issa. The verses of Shiki, Joso, Kyorai, Kikaku, Chora, Gyodai, Kakei, Izen, and others also appear, all illuminated by lovely woodblock prints. Ranging from exquisite (In the sea surf edge/Mingling with the bright small shells.../Bush-clover petals -Basho) to bittersweet (Dead my fine hopes/And dry my dreaming, but still.../Iris, blue each spring -Shushiki) to silly (Dim the grey cow comes/Mooing, mooing, and mooing/Out of the morning mist -Issa), this collection will stir your senses and your heart.
