Excerpt from The Great Crime of 1914: A Plea for Peace Soon after the war began I was obliged to undergo an operation. While waiting for the anaesthetic to be administered to me I was reading an account of the beginning of hostilities. The first thing I remember thereafter is a dull throbbing in my temples, which gradually grew into the noise of artillery and din of battle. I seemed to be a war correspondent standing on a hill outside of the city of Liege, near the road along which pitiful old men, women, and children were passing, seeking to escape from the high-explosive shells hurled by the Germans from across the River Meuse. The German artillery, however, was directed against the Liege forts. Repeated attempts had been made by the Germans to cross the river for the purpose of attacking them. The regiments of German soldiers were rushed forward over the hastily constructed pontoon bridge. Shells from the fort were hurled in their midst causing parts of human bodies to fly squirming in all directions, and fall into the bloody river which seemed choked with dead and wounded. Excerpt from The Road to Liege: The Path of Crime, August 1914 On the 7th of August, 1914, upon receiving news of the excesses which the Germans had committed from the time of their entrance into Belgium, the Belgian Government instituted an official Commission, whose duty it was to collect, collate, and examine, with the greatest impartiality and attentiveness, all such facts as came to its knowledge and appeared to be violations of the Law of Nations or of the laws and usages of war. This Commission, composed of discreet and able men, whose reputation alone constituted a guarantee of the highest value, has since its appointment sat in Antwerp and Havre, and in London, where a delegation, presided over by Sir Mackenzie Chalmers, was appointed to collect and consider the depositions of numerous witnesses who were refugees in England. In Brussels the President of the Commission was M. Van Iseghen, President of the Court of Cassation; in Antwerp and Havre, M. Cooreman, Minister of State and sometime President of the Chamber of Representatives. The results of this conscientious inquiry are contained in twenty-two Reports, which have been published in several languages. No definite denial, based upon proofs, has hitherto been made to diminish their significance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Crime Against Europe A Possible Outcome of the War of 1914 by Roger Casement Since the war, foreshadowed in these pages, has come and finds public opinion in America gravely shocked at a war it believes to be solely due to certain phases of European militarism, the writer is now persuaded to publish these articles, which at least have the merit of having been written well before the event, in the hope that they may furnish a more useful point of view. For if one thing is certain it is that European militarism is no more the cause of this war than of any previous war. Europe is not fighting to see who has the best army, or to test mere military efficiency, but because certain peoples wish certain things and are determined to get and keep them by an appeal to force. If the armies and fleets were small the war would have broken out just the same, the parties and their claims, intentions, and positions being what they are. To find the causes of the war we must seek the motives of the combatants, and if we would have a lasting peace the foundations upon which to build it must be laid bare by revealing those foundations on which the peace was broken. To find the causes of the war we should turn not to Blue Books or White Papers, giving carefully selected statements of those responsible for concealing from the public the true issues that move nations to attack each other, but should seek the unavowed aims of those nations themselves.... We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.
