Excerpt from The Greek Orators HE object of this book is to provide a reasonably short account of the works of the Orators and to give a general idea of the style of each.' It seemed to me at the outset that this object could be best attained, not by applying methods of scientific analysis, but by giving numerous quotations from the speeches to emphasise the points which I wished to bring out. I have therefore avoided as far as possible the techni calities of criticism, and illustrated my remarks by translations of characteristic passages, hoping thus to make my work easily accessible not only to classical students, but also to others who, while generally interested in the Classics, have not the time or the capacity to study them in the original. Excerpt from The Oration of Demosthenes on the Crown The present edition has received as thorough a revision as the means at my command would allow. The text (which is that of W. Dindorf has been carefully compared with that of the best editions, and with the various readings given in Dobson's edition of the Attic orators. The notes have been almost entirely rewritten, and adapted to side-sections in the text, instead of pages and lines. The side-section; are the same as those employed by Dissen, to whose excellent edition of the Oration I am much indebted inn-many other respects. A short Appendix on the Documents, and a pretty copious In dex, have been added, which, it is hoped, will not be without their use. I have referred unifomly to the Greek School Grammar of K iihner, as most satisfactorily solving, according to my view, the various questions which arise in reading, Greek. The readers of this edition cannot fail to be grateful to the enterprising printers, who have the honor of having first in troduced into this country the elegant Porsonian type in which the text appears. They will have occasion to be equally grateful to Professor C. C. Felton, of Harvard University, under whose critical and tasteful eye all the sheets have pass ed, for the general accuracy and much of the value of the edition. Excerpt from The Rhetoric of Oratory There is no modern text-book, so far as the author is aware, which covers the same ground as the present volume. The treatment covers all forms of public discourse, but the point of view is that of formal oratory; the assumption always is that one has time to write out in full a set speech for a more or less formal occasion. Of course the formal ora tion is only one of many kinds of public speeches; indeed, with the average speaker, it may be com paratively rare, but it is only by the systematic study and practice of the rhetoric of oratory that the stu dent can best train himself generally for all kinds of public speaking. Such foundation work in written composition is absolutely essential to appreciate and cultivate the oratorical style and to guard against the prolix and discursive tendencies of extempore speech. The science and art of oratory was so comprehen sively and exhaustively treated by the ancient Greek and Roman rhetoricians that, as John Quincy Adams said in his address accepting the professorship of rhetoric and oratory at Harvard, to select, com bine, and apply their precepts is the only duty left for their followers of all succeeding times, and to obtain a perfect familiarity with their instruction is to arrive at a mastery of the art. A new treatise on oratory, therefore, can be little more than themodernizing of old material - the modern application of principles elaborately wrought out by such writers as Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian. The author would not underrate his indebtedness to some of the modern treatises (cited in the text), but for the most part the present treatise simply aims to adapt ancient precepts to present-day conditions, supplementing theory with suggestive exercises and considerable illustrative matter. Excerpt from Euripides the Attic Orators: A Comparison Between the physicists and Socrates came the Sophists, who represent the birth and growth of Scepticism. This scepticism was a natural and necessary step in the progress of thought. When so many and so widely different schools sprang up, each claiming to give the true interpretation of the universe, and yet giving out doctrines so contradictory; when these doctrines had become more or less popularly known, and had been the cause of endless debate and discussion, it was an inevitable result that scepticism should spread. And this spirit was fostered also by the social and political conditions of the time; for over the whole of Greece, as we have seen, and above all in Athens, there took place in the fifth century B. C. A great and rapid development in all departments of life. The victory over Persia, combined with the steady growth of democracy, had 'given a stimulus and promoted an activity which was quite unprecedented. The power of speaking was becoming more important, and was the chief weapon in the hands of ambitious citizens; and men were eager to acquire powers of argument and debate, and to learn the opinions of the greatest thinkers of the day. The sophists came forward to satisfy these wants, and in so doing they incidentally rendered a great service to Greek prose. The most important of them was Protagoras 2, whose treatise on Truth began with the words, Man is the measure of all things, ' - meaning that there is no such thing as objective truth, that truth is not absolute but relative, and similarly that, in matters of conduct, right and wrong depend on opinion. Excerpt from Greek Literature Life.-but the Greek books are not merely interesting as showing the methods and aims of early thinkers. They contain results, too, which have had the deepest and widest influence on the whole of modern life, in religion, in morality, in science, in politics, in litera ture. The thoughts of the great Greek thinkers have been bearing fruit in the world ever since they were first uttered. In some special sciences, the work done by the Greeks remains a basis of study to this day, as in Ethics and in Logic and in Geometry. It is in Greek historians and Greek orators that we read some of the political lessons most directly useful for our own time. Neither the history of Christian doc trine, nor the outer history of the Christian Church, can be fully understood without reference to the character and work of the Greek mind. Under the. This is the third volume in the Oratory of Classical Greece series. Planned for publication over several years, the series will present all of the surviving speeches from the late fifth and fourth centuries B.C. in new translations prepared by classical scholars who are at the forefront of the discipline. These translations are especially designed for the needs and interests of today’s undergraduates, Greekless scholars in other disciplines, and the general public. Classical oratory is an invaluable resource for the study of ancient Greek life and culture. The speeches offer evidence on Greek moral views, social and economic conditions, political and social ideology, and other aspects of Athenian culture that have been largely ignored: women and family life, slavery, and religion, to name just a few. This volume contains the three surviving speeches of Aeschines (390–? B.C.). His speeches all revolve around political developments in Athens during the second half of the fourth century B.C. and reflect the internal political rivalries in an Athens overshadowed by the growing power of Macedonia in the north. The first speech was delivered when Aeschines successfully prosecuted Timarchus, a political opponent, for having allegedly prostituted himself as a young man. The other two speeches were delivered in the context of Aeschines’ long-running political feud with Demosthenes. As a group, the speeches provide important information on Athenian law and politics, the political careers of Aeschines and Demosthenes, sexuality and social history, and the historical rivalry between Athens and Macedonia.

Excerpt from Lycurgus: The Speech Against Leocrates For the material of the Introduction, in addition to the relevant portions of Blass and Rehdantz, I have consulted works of general reference such as Gilbert's Antiquities, Jebb's Attic Orators, Prof. E. A. Gardner's Ancient Athens, Bury's History of Greece, and the Cambridge Companion. I have been able to make use of Prof. J. F. Dobson's The Greek Orators for matters connected with Lycurgus' style, and I am indebted to Mr Wyse's introduction to his monumental edition of Isaeus for information regarding the manuscript tradition for the minor orators.
