The Green Announcement was written by Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian (as), the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at, to remove the doubts and misgivings that had arisen out of the death of his son who has come to be known as Bashir the First. Bashir was born on 7th August 1887 and died on 4th November 1888. Previously the Promised Messiah (as) had announced, on the basis of Divine revelations, that God had promised to grant him a son who would possess extraordinary qualities, would have a long life, and would be Musleh Mau'ud (the Promised Reformer). Thus when Bashir the First died after sixteen months, the opponents pounced at the opportunity and began denouncing the Promised Messiah (as) ever more vehemently. In this announcement, the Promised Messiah (as) made it clear that he had never claimed that this particular boy would be the Promised Reformer. He also forcefully reiterated that the promised child would be born within the nine year period specified in the prophecy (1886-1895). Subsequent events showed each and every word of the prophecies to be true. In keeping with the prophecies, Bashir the Second (Hadrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmood Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih II ra) was born on 12th January 1889. He was gifted with such extraordinary and unique qualities as were acknowledged by friend and foe alike. He died at the age of 76 after a life of tremendous achievement and is remembered as Musleh Mau'ud or the Promised Reformer.

A detailed and rigorous analysis of the effect of climate policies on climate change that questions the empirical and theoretical support for the “green paradox.” Recent developments suggest that well-intended climate policies—including carbon taxes and subsidies for renewable energy—might not accomplish what policy makers intend. Hans-Werner Sinn has described a “green paradox,” arguing that these policies could hasten global warming by encouraging owners of fossil fuel reserves to increase their extraction rates for fear that their reserves will become worthless. In this volume, economists investigate the empirical and theoretical support for the green paradox. Offering detailed and rigorous analyses of the forces and assumptions driving Sinn's argument, the contributors consider whether rising carbon tax rates inevitably speed up climate change; the effects of the design of resource markets, the availability of clean substitutes, and the development of new technologies; and the empirical evidence (or lack thereof) for the green paradox result. They consider extraction costs; sustainability and innovation; timing, announcement effects, and time consistency in relation to policy measures; and empirical results for the green paradox phenomena under several alternative policy measures. Barakatud Du'a or The Blessings of Prayer, written by the Promised Messiah in 1893, is a refutation of Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan's view that there is no such thing as the acceptance of prayer, and that prayer is no more than a form of worship. The Promised Messiah rejects this view and proclaims that Allah hears and accepts the supplication of believers which are offered in humility and sincerity, and that the acceptance of prayer sets in motion its own chain of causes which culminates in the fulfilment of the objective prayed for. In the second part of the book, which deals with Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan's other book Usulut Tafsir (On the Principles of Commentary of the Holy Quran), the Promised Messiah presents his criteria or guiding principles for the correct interpretation of the Holy Quran.

Funding of the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) will cease at the end of March 2011, and Defra's capability and presence to improve the sustainability of Government will be increased. Whilst regretting the Government's decision to stop funding the SDC, the Committee sees an opportunity to reassess and revitalise the architecture for delivering sustainable development. The experience of SDC's work within Government departments to improve their sustainability skills and performance is at risk of being lost, so the Government must ensure that this knowledge and expertise is absorbed by departments. Sustainable development needs to be driven from the centre of Government by a Minister and department with Whitehall-wide influence. They must be capable of holding all departments to account for their sustainable development performance. The Committee does not think Defra is best placed to lead this drive, and recommends that the Cabinet Office assume this role. And the Treasury could use its position to continue to develop 'sustainability reporting' by departments, strengthen the system of impact assessments and the 'Green Book' investment appraisal methodology for policy-making, and embed the results of the Government Economic Service review of the economics of sustainability and environmental valuation into those impact assessments and appraisals. Greater political leadership from the top should be brought to bear. The Government must introduce a full set of indicators to measure sustainable development that can be used to develop policy and must provide a new strategic underpinning for its commitment to sustainable development as an overarching goal of Government policy-making.
