Excerpt from The Green Enigma It was a woman who had approached, young, indeed of no more than sixteen years, small, but with full round limbs, and a deep bosom where jutted forth, with glorious curves, twin hillocks of dusky pearl from beneath her hair. She was fair skinned, even beyond the paleness of Kshatriya women, and her black tresses of hair hung to her waist in smooth, silky waves. There was no single fault in her face, the pale olive of which was deeply tinged with crimson on her cheeks. Her eyes of liquid brown were set wide apart, and had not the slight slant common to wo men of her race; her dainty nose had something of piquancy added to its perfection, and the bright red lips could not but part a little to reveal a glis tening row of tiny teeth. Her expression was one of absolute innocence; yet there was mischief, too, in her look, an effect due, perhaps, to the contrast of her pointed chin with the wide brow, perhaps to her manner of meeting the youth's level gaze with slightly inclined head; and a smile seemed ever to be gathering upon her face, or just departing. Detective Green returns from vacation to find he's reunited with his ex partner, Keys, who is in a predicament. She's working with the FBI in a case of kidnapping where three women have been abducted over three days. At the same time, Keys is involved with an assault charge against her most recent partner who they discover has a history. As the days go by, the kidnapping, which started out simply, gets more and more complicated. The husbands of the three abducted women have no intention of paying out the ransom, even though they have the money to do so. As the case goes on, Green and Keys get more and more confused, with no crime scene, no leads and nothing to go on. This is the fifth novel In the Green Series.

Built in the fifth century b.c., the Parthenon has been venerated for more than two millennia as the West’s ultimate paragon of beauty and proportion. Since the Enlightenment, it has also come to represent our political ideals, the lavish temple to the goddess Athena serving as the model for our most hallowed civic architecture. But how much do the values of those who built the Parthenon truly correspond with our own? And apart from the significance with which we have invested it, what exactly did this marvel of human hands mean to those who made it? In this revolutionary book, Joan Breton Connelly challenges our most basic assumptions about the Parthenon and the ancient Athenians. Beginning with the natural environment and its rich mythic associations, she re-creates the development of the Acropolis—the Sacred Rock at the heart of the city-state—from its prehistoric origins to its Periklean glory days as a constellation of temples among which the Parthenon stood supreme. In particular, she probes the Parthenon’s legendary frieze: the 525-foot-long relief sculpture that originally encircled the upper reaches before it was partially destroyed by Venetian cannon fire (in the seventeenth century) and most of what remained was shipped off to Britain (in the nineteenth century) among the Elgin marbles. The frieze’s vast enigmatic procession—a dazzling pageant of cavalrymen and elders, musicians and maidens—has for more than two hundred years been thought to represent a scene of annual civic celebration in the birthplace of democracy. But thanks to a once-lost play by Euripides (the discovery of which, in the wrappings of a Hellenistic Egyptian mummy, is only one of this book’s intriguing adventures), Connelly has uncovered a long-buried meaning, a story of human sacrifice set during the city’s mythic founding. In a society startlingly preoccupied with cult ritual, this story was at the core of what it meant to be Athenian. Connelly reveals a world that beggars our popular notions of Athens as a city of staid philosophers, rationalists, and rhetoricians, a world in which our modern secular conception of democracy would have been simply incomprehensible. The Parthenon’s full significance has been obscured until now owing in no small part, Connelly argues, to the frieze’s dismemberment. And so her investigation concludes with a call to reunite the pieces, in order that what is perhaps the greatest single work of art surviving from antiquity may be viewed more nearly as its makers intended. Marshalling a breathtaking range of textual and visual evidence, full of fresh insights woven into a thrilling narrative that brings the distant past to life, The Parthenon Enigma is sure to become a landmark in our understanding of the civilization from which we claim cultural descent.

Alan Turing The Enigma written by Andrew Hodges and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-10 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The official book behind the Academy Award-winning film The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley It is only a slight exaggeration to say that the British mathematician Alan Turing (1912-1954) saved the Allies from the Nazis, invented the computer and artificial intelligence, and anticipated gay liberation by decades--all before his suicide at age forty-one. This New York Times–bestselling biography of the founder of computer science, with a new preface by the author that addresses Turing's royal pardon in 2013, is the definitive account of an extraordinary mind and life. Capturing both the inner and outer drama of Turing’s life, Andrew Hodges tells how Turing’s revolutionary idea of 1936--the concept of a universal machine--laid the foundation for the modern computer and how Turing brought the idea to practical realization in 1945 with his electronic design. The book also tells how this work was directly related to Turing’s leading role in breaking the German Enigma ciphers during World War II, a scientific triumph that was critical to Allied victory in the Atlantic. At the same time, this is the tragic account of a man who, despite his wartime service, was eventually arrested, stripped of his security clearance, and forced to undergo a humiliating treatment program--all for trying to live honestly in a society that defined homosexuality as a crime. The inspiration for a major motion picture starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley, Alan Turing: The Enigma is a gripping story of mathematics, computers, cryptography, and homosexual persecution.

If you’re a youth in 1941 living in San Francisco and a graduate of Stanford University, fluent in speech communications, especially Japanese, your talents were needed by Army intelligence immediately. If the United States went to war against Japan, intelligence realized they had very few personnel that could speak the language or understand the culture, Including Japanese Americans. Their search of universities throughout the United States turned up very sparse results. They started a school to teach the Japanese language and, if possible, the culture of the isolated country to future code breakers. The Presidio, a military post in San Francisco, was chosen to go forward immediately with the task. The next priority was to compose a cryptology dictionary of the language, similar to what Churchill had done at Bletchley Park. It was the central site for British code breakers, intercepting and decoding the German transmission. The youth of American stepped up to the challenge, including an extraordinarily talented young lady, Sue Lee Ono. She was fluent in Japanese, German, Spanish, French and understood several Chinese dialects. Sue Lee grew up in San Francisco in Japantown under the tutelage of her dear Uncle Yoshi. He taught her the knowledge of the Japanese culture and a deep understanding of the history and artifacts. Uncle Yoshi was a collector and a known authority of Asian art. Sue Lee settles into the routine at the Presidio, helping to set up a school for Japanese Americans eager to do their part for their country against the ever-present prejudice. With the bombing of Pearl Harbor, all hell breaks loose! Sue Lee is caught in a murderous past after the death of her beloved Uncle Yoshi along with the ever-changing World War!
