A lust for travel and adventure drives the Messiah of Budget Travel and his unwitting disciples to extraordinary lengths as they strive to journey a bit further and a bit longer. None more so than the Tightwad Economist, who has just $3000 and ten months to get from Los Angeles to Santiago de Chile. Budget about $10 a day for transport, food, accommodation, visas and booze. This tale chronicles the adventures of Tightwad and his Gringo mates on the Gringo Trail in the early 1990s when post offices and the Gringo grapevine were communications bread and butter for travellers. Much of Central America was just emerging from civil wars and ruthless dictatorships, while South American countries struggled with drugs, and poverty and a reputation for violence and corruption. Tightwad and his mates dispel some of the myths as they irreverantly ply the trail and open their eyes to the magic of Latin America.

At the turn of the twenty-first century, several preoccupied travelers wander the gringo trail in South America. Among them, Albert, a retired U.S. postal worker, has come to the southern continent to “live in the moment.” Ten months into his journey, however, after experiencing epiphany on Salar de Uyuni, the power of love in the Rurrenabaque rain forest, and unbounded farce during the offseason at a beach town in Peru, the weary pilgrim can’t keep his eyes off his watch. Among them, Reynaldo, a Spanish teacher on sabbatical, aspires to reconstitute his life following divorce. He has already blown a chance for renewal with a cellist he met during Holy Week in Santa Cruz and driven off a poet who attempted to seduce him the night he met Albert. After breaking up a fist fight in Vilcabamba, Equador, Reynaldo hides out in his room at a hostel and wonders whether deliverance from his neurotic obsession will ever transpire. Among them, Marci, wife of an incorrigible philanderer, hopes that holiday in rough country with her husband will save their marriage. When Jerry ditches her at the start of a hike on Huayna Picchu, a Chicano boy named Simon volunteers to lead her up the peak and then plunges to his death at the top of their climb. Back in Cuzco, she learns that her spouse has betrayed her yet again. Among them, Simon, who was cheated out of a field trip to Peru in high school, has vowed, during a stay at a treatment center, to make the journey on his own. Due to his shaky grasp of geography, he begins his southern trek in Chile. In Tupiza, Bolivia, he befriends an addled Vietnam Veteran and, during an altercation between the two, shoves the ex-marine off a cliff. Sendero Gringo is a collection of travelogues that begins at the end of one road and ends at the beginning of another. No one path guides its reader but another and another wind ahead and back instead.

?Let's just chuck it all in and go to South America? Lisa said one day. Other people do this I thought, but surely not us? Strap yourself in for a hilarious and rollicking tale of a couple with entirely different ideas on what to do and see, the best way to go about it, and of course how to spend their tight budget. Sampling everything from the steamy wilds of Venezuela, to the freezing peaks of the Andes, from the fury of the Pacific Ocean to the parched Bolivian desert, not to mention a dozen other death-defying experiences along the way. All without much clue of what was happening until it happened. Fear not, I too have read a lot of travel books, so this is guaranteed not to include self-discovery, over descriptiveness and incessant droning about scenery. You?ll find some top tips and of course an introduction to all the people we met along the way ? The Good, The Bad and the Downright Annoying* *Spoiler ? plenty of these.

In 1974, at the height of hippie culture, women's liberation and sexual freedom, the author set off on a journey that lasted nineteen months through Central and South America and included the birth of her daughter in the Andean highlands of Ecuador. As an artist, she kept a journal of over 100 pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations of the places she visited. Traveling with her eccentric boyfriend by train, plane, bus, ship and hitchhiking, she encountered many unusual situations and people and even a tropical disease, Leishmaniasis, that a local healer called leprosy. Finding a house to rent in Otavalo, Ecuador, the author created acrylic paintings of the incredible landscape surrounding her home, while she was pregnant. Her mother came to Ecuador to be with her when she gave birth with her father arriving a week later to meet his granddaughter. This book displays the artwork she created and tells the unique story of her travels and her evolution as an artist and mother living in Ecuador in a time before technology.
