Quite simply, the finest collection of the works of the Group of Seven ever published. At a critical time in Canada's history, the Group of Seven revolutionized the nation's appreciation of art by celebrating the country as a wild and eminently beautiful land. Their paintings of the wilderness are unmistakable and evoke the same response in viewers today as they did when first exhibited 80 years ago. The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson, which includes many never-before-reproduced paintings, presents the most complete and extensive collection of their works ever published. Containing 400 paintings and drawings, it reveals the talent and genius of all eleven painters who, at one time or another, were part of the movement: Frank Carmichael Frank Johnston A.J. Casson Arthur Lismer LeMoine FitzGerald J.E.H. MacDonald Lawren Harris Tom Thomson Edwin Holgate F.H. Varley A.Y. Jackson The artwork is organized by the various regions of Canada and also includes sections on the war years and still life which demonstrate the versatility of the artists. Introductory essays explain the works and provide a context for greater understanding and appreciation.

Tom Thomson developed an artistic language that captured the unique qualities of the Canadian landscape - dazzling in color and in tune with the subtle changing of the seasons. After his untimely death, Thomson's friends organized a memorial exhibition, and followed this up by forming probably the most famous artistic force in Canadian art history: the Group of Seven. Lawren Harris, J.E.H. MacDonald, Arthur Lismer, Frederick Varley, Frank Johnston, Franklin Carmichael, and A.Y. Jackson created - along with Thomson - a landscape style that to this day influences the way Canadians visualize their own country. Highly revered in Canada, these great artists are virtually unknown outside. This spectacularly illustrated book, arranged according to the geographical areas depicted, with scholarly essays investigating different aspects of the painters' craft, aims to redress that imbalance.

Defiant Spirits written by Ross King and has been published by D & M Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-25 with Art categories.

Beginning in 1912, Defiant Spirits traces the artistic development of Tom Thomson and the future members of the Group of Seven, Franklin Carmichael, Lawren Harris, A. Y. Jackson, Franz Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J. E. H. MacDonald, and Frederick Varley, over a dozen years in Canadian history. Working in an eclectic and sometimes controversial blend of modernist styles, they produced what an English critic celebrated in the 1920s as the “most vital group of paintings” of the 20th century. Inspired by Cézanne, Van Gogh and other modernist artists, they tried to interpret the Ontario landscape in light of the strategies of the international avant-garde. Based after 1914 in the purpose-built Studio Building for Canadian Art, the young artists embarked on what Lawren Harris called “an all-engrossing adventure”: travelling north into the anadian Shield and forging a style of painting appropriate to what they regarded as the unique features of Canada’s northern landscape. Rigorously researched and drawn from archival documents and letters, Defiant Spirits constitutes a “group biography,” reconstructing the men’s aspirations, frustrations and achievements. It details not only the lives of Tom Thomson and the members of the Group of Seven but also the political and social history of Canada

The Best Of The Group Of Seven written by Joan Murray and has been published by McClelland & Stewart Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Art categories.

A stunning, full-colour collection of the brilliant paintings that revolutionized Canadian art. In the early twentieth century a group of young artists strived to create, in Lawren Harris’s words, paintings that would “embody the moods and character and spirit of the country.” The fifty-four breathtaking colour plates in this book confirm their success. Well-loved landscapes, like Tom Thomson’s Jack Pine, appear beside some unexpected treasures like Edwin Holgate’s Nude in a Landscape. The essays by Joan Murray and Harris give historical context to the Group of Seven, and fascinating captions provide biographical notes and insightful critiques of each member’s style. No Canadian library is complete without this beautiful volume.
