The story about the guards at the tomb of Jesus (Matt 27:62-66 and 28:11-15) has often been labelled as an apologetical legend, and is rather too often all but ignored in both Matthean scholarship and in the studies on the resurrection stories. The aim of this book is to explore the origin of the guard story and analyze it in the context of continuous conflict between some Jewish leaders and Christ-believers. The author suggests that the story is derived from a pre-Matthean tradition which was a reply to the Jewish accusation that the disciples had stolen the body of Jesus. It is also proposed that the guards were first introduced to the story by the Jewish leaders in order to give credence to the accusation of theft. The Christian accusation of bribery by the priests on the one hand, and the theft of the body by the disciples of Jesus on the other, concerned the very honor of the leaders for the respective religious groups. The author suggests the argument might have been more as to who is to be believed than what had actually happened, thus explaining the scantiness of source-material to defend any one side. The historicity of the guard narrative is secondary to its function in the narrative which is to reveal the continuing polemic relevance that surrounded the events of Christ's resurrection. The author presents a two-fold conclusion: (1) that the presence of the guards at the tomb as an invention by the priests does not benefit the Christian narrative; (2) the plausible later Christian apologetical counter-response yields no further historical credence for or against the Christian resurrection narrative which is solidly based on early accounts of witnesses to the empty tomb.

This volume engages the Gospel of Matthew in full awareness of its inherently political character. Weaver situates Matthew's version of the "good news of the kingdom" squarely within the "real world" of first-century Palestine and its occupying power, the Roman Empire. The essays here focus prominently and collectively on the issues of power and violence that not only pervade the historically occupied Jewish community of first-century Palestine, but also are clearly visible throughout Matthew's narrative account. A "lower-level" reading of the Matthean text offers a bleak portrait of the overwhelming power and violence exerted by the Roman occupying authorities and their upper-echelon Jewish collaborators against the wider Jewish community of first-century Palestine. But an "upper-level"/"God's-eye" reading of Matthew's narrative consistently reveals the fundamental irony at the heart of the New Testament as a whole, of the Jesus story broadly conceived, and of Matthew's narrative account in specific. A robust scholarly defense of the distinctiveness of the canonical Gospels. Do the four New Testament gospels share some essence that distinguishes them from noncanonical early Gospels? The tendency among biblical scholars of late has been to declare the answer to this question no—that Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were grouped together by happenstance and are defended as canonical today despite there being no essential commonalities between them. Simon Gathercole challenges this prevailing view and argues that in fact the theological content of the New Testament Gospels distinguishes them substantially from noncanonical Gospels. Gathercole shows how the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John each include four key points that also formed the core of early Christian preaching and teaching: Jesus’s identity as messiah, the saving death of Jesus, the resurrection of Jesus, and Scripture’s foretelling of the Christ event. In contrast, most noncanonical Gospels—like the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Truth, and Marcion’s Gospel—only selectively appropriated these central concerns of early Christian proclamation.
