"If you have any young friends who aspire to become writers, the second greatest favor you can do them is to present them with copies of The Elements of Style . The first greatest, of course, is to shoot them now, while they're happy." Dorothy Parker New beginnings imply there were previous, possibly failed, attempts-other tries that just didn't "take." Some might say "new beginnings" is redundant. After all, aren't all beginnings new? And when is a new beginning begun? A challenge, indeed, if you are a writer. Whether a neophyte rower clearly out of your league, a washed up detective looking for that redeeming case, an ex-con questioning ones self-worth, a new bride with second thoughts, or somewhere/anywhere in between, our authors took the theme and spun it around, whipped it up, and turned it into something refreshing, stimulating, soul-wrenching, thought-provoking, or simply fun. We all may not share the same concept of what constitutes a new beginning and our experiences can be worlds and galaxies apart, but the one common thread that pulls us together is the passion to write and share inner-most thoughts and creativity. Some might even argue that the writer's desire is strong enough to overcome criticism and rejection. Others will say that sharing our talents and inner struggles is redemption all its own. But in the end, the baring of the soul in creative art forms becomes the end point, the greater goal. There are those writers, as Ms. Parker suggests, that might even be willing to take a bullet for it! Managing Editors: Marcia Buompensiero & Rivkah Sleeth Contributing Editors: Irene Flynn, Asst. Peggy Webling And The Story Behind Frankenstein written by Peggy Webling and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-21 with Performing Arts categories.

The 1931 Universal Pictures film adaptation of Frankenstein directed by James Whale and starring Boris Karloff as the now iconic Monster claims in its credits to be 'Adapted from the play by Peggy Webling'. Webling's play sought to humanize the creature, was the first stage adaptation to position Frankenstein and his creation as doppelgängers, and offered a feminist perspective on scientific efforts to create life without women, ideas that suffuse today's perceptions of Frankenstein's monster. The original play script exists in several different versions, only two of which have ever been consulted by scholars; no version has ever been published. Nor have scholars had access to Webling's private papers and correspondence, preserved in a family archive, so that the evolution of Frankenstein from book to stage to screen has never been fully charted. In Peggy Webling and the Story behind Frankenstein, Dorian Gieseler Greenbaum (Webling's great grandniece) and Bruce Graver present the full texts of Webling's unpublished play for the first time. A vital critical edition, this book includes: - the 1927 British Library Frankenstein script used for the first production of the play in Preston, Lancashire - the 1928 Frankenstein script in the Library of Congress, used for productions in UK provincial theatres from autumn 1928 till 1930 - the 1930 Frankenstein Prompt Script for the London production and later provincial performances, held by the Westminster Archive, London - Webling's private correspondence including negotiations with theatre managers and Universal Pictures, family letters about the writing and production process, and selected contracts - Text of the chapter 'Frankenstein' from Webling's unpublished literary memoir, The Story of a Pen for additional context - Biography of Webling that bears directly on the sensibilities and skills she brought to the writing of her play - History of how the play came to be written and produced - The relationship of Webling's play to earlier stage and film adaptations - An exploration of playwright and screenwriter John L. Balderston's changes to Webling's play and Whale's borrowings from it in the 1931 film Offering a new perspective on the genesis of the Frankenstein movie, this critical exploration makes available a unique and necessary 'missing link' in the novel's otherwise well-documented transmedia cultural history.

The award-winning memoir, When I Was Her Daughter is a raw, honest account of one girl’s journey through madness, loss, and a broken child welfare system, where only the most resilient survive. Seven-year-old Leslie has a serious problem. Someone is trying to kill her. Leslie’s mother suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. She writes rambling manifestos and forces her children to live on the run to evade capture by the Russian spies she believes are after them. Her mother’s ultimate goal is to protect her children from capture, but who will step in when she is convinced that killing them herself will save them from a worse fate? Each time the authorities repeatedly intervene, the children are again and again returned to their mother’s custody before becoming wards of the state. Once separated from her family and thrust into foster care for the foreseeable future, Leslie learns to navigate a new kind of fear and loneliness. Her ultimate goal is to be loved, but how can her mother ever love her now that she is so far away? Will she ever see her again? Will she ever find a safe place to land? In this unbelievable story of grit and grief, of hope and heart, Leslie must discover her own strength to ask for what she needs. Since it seems nobody will talk about her mother’s mental illness and nothing will bring the family peace, Leslie pretends she is—and always has been—her teacher’s daughter. This true story about the redemptive power of patience and courage reminds us that unconditional love is possible, even for a lost and angry child struggling to understand where she belongs.

Witness written by Lyle C. May and has been published by Haymarket Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-16 with Social Science categories.

A first-hand account of the death penalty's wholly destructive nature. In Witness, Lyle C. May offers a scathing critique of shifts in sentencing laws, prison policies that ensure recidivism, and classic "tough on crime" views that don't make society safer or prevent crime. These insightful and analytical essays explore capital punishment, life imprisonment, prison education, prison journalism, as well as what activism from inside looks like on the road toward abolishing the carceral state. No outside journalist can adequately report what happens inside death row or what it is like to live through thirty-three executions of people you know. May's grounded writings in Witness challenge the myths, misconceptions, and misinformation about the criminal legal system and death in prison, guiding readers on a journey through North Carolina's congregate death row, where the author has spent over twenty years of his life. With a foreword by activist, lawyer, and professor Danielle Purifoy, and drawing on the work of Angela Y. Davis, Mariame Kaba, and other abolitionist scholars, Witness shows there is more to life under the sentence of death than what is portrayed in crime dramas or mass media. Lyle C. May's life, journalism, and activism are a guidebook to abolitionism in practice.

This is an open access book. The COVID-19 pandemic in the last two years has influenced how educational system works. Online learning became the primal policy taken by all institutions in the world to lower the risk of the virus spread. Despite the drawbacks of the online learning, teachers and students were accustomed with the distant learning through web meetings, Learning Management Systems (LMS) and other online learning platforms. In that time, topics under digital learning and education 5.0 were the main stakes in academic disseminations. This year some institutions start to conduct their teaching and learning process classically as before the pandemic, others are still continuing online and not few are in hybrid. This leaves a question: what learning reform should be made in post-pandemic era? This conference invites researchers, experts, teachers and students to discuss the coping solutions of the question. It is important for them to contribute to the understanding of re-imaging online education for better futures, innovative learning design, new skills for living and working in new times, global challenge of education, learning and teaching with blended learning, flipped learning, integrating life skills for students in the curriculum, developing educators for the future distance learning, humanities learning in the digital era, assessment and measurement in education, challenges and transformations in education, technology in teaching and learning, new learning and teaching models. Not limited to these, scholars may add another interesting topic related to learning reform in post-pandemic era to present.

This transatlantic study analyses a missing chapter in the history of art collecting, the first art market bubble in the United States. In the decades following the Civil War, French art monopolized art collections across the United States. During this “Gilded Age picture rush,” the commercial art system-art dealers, galleries, auction houses, exhibitions, museums, art journals, press coverage, art histories, and collection catalogues-established a strong foothold it has not relinquished to this day. In addition, a pervasive concern for improving aesthetics and providing the best contemporary art to educate the masses led to the formation not only of private art collections, but also of institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and to the publication of art histories. Richly informed by collectors' and art dealers' diaries, letters, stock books, journals, and hitherto neglected art histories, The New York Market for French Art in the Gilded Age, 1867-1893 offers a fresh perspective on this trailblazing era.
