The GUMBO Pot Poems is a book celebrating food, friendships and family! Black Gumbo is part of the title I chose for this book because Gumbo is one of New Orleans fine cuisine. When you make Gumbo from scratch you have to make the root perfect; because, if you burn the root of the gumbo then you are left with a bitter gumbo and a bitter taste in your mouth. That was the kind of taste we were left with when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans on August 29, 2005. Its powerful winds and rain over threw the city and turn the city upside down. As well as many lives. It was a bitter battle. This is how I describe the aftermath of the hurricane. I compared it to a refugee movie being film, but no-one was behind the camera. It was horrible. When you read this book, keep in mind, The Reality, The Healing and The Hope. Being a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, I learned to embrace the city's culture. New Orleans is well known for its poetic speaking as well as its fine cuisine. When I was growing up, I found that times were hard. But I love to write poetry because it's my deepest thoughts that come from my heart. I wrote a poem to the former Mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana, Marc H. Morial, in 1994. He said, "It was very inspiring." After Hurricane Katrina and the devastation that came along with it, all I could do was pray and write. Out of it I wrote my first book, Soul to Soul of Inspirations, published by PublishAmerica.
