The word, "Meditations," has a few meanings that is often misunderstood or confused. There is meditation, or meditating, which is the act of meditating (which I recommend), and there is a meditation, which is the act of writing or thinking on a subject. This book is based on the latter definition. The following "Meditations" are short essays about life, health, mindset, and effectiveness in the pursuit of being a better human being. Because you are reading this book, I'm going to assume that you care about becoming a better person. If you don't, then this isn't the book for you and you should give it to someone who is interested in becoming better. The beginning of each Meditation starts with a quote. Some time in the near past, I developed the habit of writing short essays by starting with a motivational quote that moved me in some way. After finding a quote, I would just let it flow and wrote whatever came to me. I would never know where the writing would take me. At first, this bothered me. I liked having a plan and knowing what my main point was. But I soon learned that my best work always came when I just let it rip. I now know that this is how inspiration works: it's unpredictable and rarely tamed. So I decided I would embrace this new writing practice and now you have the book in your hands because of it. So why am I telling you this? Well, as par for the course, I am again starting this introduction without having much idea of what I wanted to say. And as it goes, I figured it out after I started. I want you to open your mind to what you are about to read. I think the best writing is writing that gets the reader to think, to ask questions. I've never liked "preachy" writing, or writing that left little to the indignation. To me, writing is an exercise of the mind with the most benefits coming as a result of the places the mind goes on its own. I hope you will embrace your mind's desire to go down different paths. If you are inspired, write it down or you will lose it. Convert that inspiration into a form of action. Then take that action (more on this later). I have succeeded if you take-away one positive idea or benefit that applies to your life. I hope you take action on any of the ideas that come into your head while reading this book. If you do, I will have succeeded.

You already know the dedication it takes to see results in one area of your life. Now it's time to apply your "strength training" across the board. When someone asks you what day of the week it is do you say which body part you're working that day (Chest day, Leg day, Upper body, or Lower body)? I know I'm not the only one. Many people don't understand our enthusiasm for working out. It's more than the gym...it's our life. Ever since my parents got me a weight bench for my 14th birthday, diet and exercise has been a passion of mine. All my closest friends felt the same way; we were hooked. I loved the progression I've made throughout the years, going from a chubby kid not being able to do 1 push-up to having a 6-pack and being able to bench 250 pounds. Despite my progression, I was unsatisfied with where I was in life. I was in excellent shape, but still felt inadequate in many areas. I was using the gym to hide from my problems. I worried about everything, got stressed easily, and was terrified of failure. I thought, It would be great if I could translate my success in the gym to other areas of my life. To have more confidence in my abilities, to be able to take more risks and pursue my dreams. Again, I'm not alone. I know many gym-goers that are living unsatisfied lives and I wrote this book to help them become enthusiastic about life the same way they are about working out. It occurred to me that the knowledge was there; I have a doctorate degree and am highly educated on the human body. Also, I spent hundreds of hours researching exercise and nutrition throughout my life in hopes of getting the body of my dreams. I needed to find a way to translate it to something more than lifting weights. I realized I could make long lasting changes if I took something I knew and was passionate about and made it applicable to life. Whenever a gym metaphor came to me I logged it in my phone and would share it with other "gym rats." Often I heard, "I never thought about it like that before. That's awesome!" After a couple months of logging my ideas, I realized I had enough material to write a book on gym metaphors. I finished school in 2015, but I'm now a student of life. Every day I'm observing myself and people around me and learning what I can do to make life better for all of us. One of the best ways to make radical changes is to take what you already know (going to the gym) and apply it to something larger (your values, character, self-esteem, etc.). Stories and metaphors are powerful, especially if they are centered on things you're interested in. I've found these have yielded the greatest results in making positive changes in my life and those I share my ideas with. If you love working out, then you can't miss out on these 32 metaphors that will change how you live your life. These ideas are for the person that still works out on holidays, vacations, and their birthday. Working out is something they have to do, it's something they want to do. This book is for the person that loves the gym and wants to get even more out of life. I had so much fun writing this and hope this short book will release the superhuman strength that's already inside you. Please give me the opportunity to show you 32 ways how the "gym of life" will help you "max out" professionally, personally, and spiritually!

"These essays address such key topics in the cultural, political, and intellectual life of our time as the tyranny of exercise, the tyranny of nutrition and food snobbery, the sexualization of childhood (and everything else), the philosophical meaning of Radiohead, the rise and fall of the hipster, the impact of the Occupy Wall Street movement, and the crisis of policing. Four of the selections address, directly and unironically, the meaning of life what might be the right philosophical stance to adopt toward one's self and the world." -- Amazon.com.

BRENDAN LEONARD HATES RUNNING. He hates it so much that he once logged fifty-two marathon-length runs in fifty-two weeks. Now he’s sharing everything he’s learned about the sport so that you can hate it too. Packed with wisdom, humor, attitude, tips, and quotes—and more than sixty illuminating charts—I Hate Running and You Can Too delivers a powerful message of motivation from a truly relatable mentor. Leonard nails the love-hate relationship most runners have with the sport. He knows the difficulty of getting off the couch, teaches us to get comfortable with being uncomfortable, embraces the mix of running with walking. And he shares all that he’s learned—celebrating the mantra of “Easy, light, smooth, and fast,” observing that any body that runs is a runner’s body. Plus Leonard knows all the practical stuff, from training methods to advice for when you hit a setback or get injured. Even the answer to that big question a lot of runners occasionally ask: Why? Easy: Running helps us understand commitment, develop patience, discover self-discipline, find mental toughness, and prove to ourselves that we can do something demanding. And, of course, burn off that extra serving of nachos.

And Other Essays written by Michael Cohen and has been published by Interactive Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-03 with Literary Collections categories.

In this essay collection, the sequel to his A Place to Read, Michael Cohen presents the odd idea of the suicide note as a writing project that can be critiqued like any other, describes encounters with illegal border crossers in south Texas, and ponders the sudden popularity of books about atheism. Books are a frequent subject here, and Cohen makes an argument for The Maltese Falcon as the Great American Novel, searches for the perfect, the Platonic, nature handbook, and compares playing golf to reading about it. Reading is, for him, as engrossing a form of experience as any other—say hitchhiking through the Southwest with an old friend, the joys of flying small planes, or the charm of studying ancient Greek while people-watching at the gym, all experiences chronicled here. He looks back at the effect a 1956 collision of two airliners over the Grand Canyon had on him as a kid fond of flying, and how he learned about the joys of good food during a wanderjahr in Europe. Many of these essays begin with a question: whether Americans deserve their reputation for materialism, why we seem to have lost the climate change battle, and whether talking to yourself might really be beneficial. Another frequent topic is how our ideal places cannot avoid being bruised by time. He looks at what happened as the Tucson bars of his college days closed or morphed into very different places. He traces seasonal changes in the desert. He notes what happens to its effect when a giant cross beside I-40 in Texas is joined by equally giant windmills. And he takes a mind’s-eye tour through Paris’s terrace cafés and their literary associations after the 2015 terrorist attack there.
