Excerpt from The Hand-Book of Needlework IN the following pages I have endeavoured to embra'ce those subjects which appeared most worthy of notice in a Treatise on Decorative Needlework, and by combining a brief historical sketch with a detailed account of the practice of each department, to render them more generally interesting than a mere Manual of directions and examples. Excerpt from The Ladies' Complete Guide to Crochet, Fancy Knitting, and Needlework After these rude attempts at a first step in the arts, it is not wonderful that improvements were made, almost unconsciously, and that the innate genius that existed then as now in the female bosom found at all times some imperfect means of expression through the needle, which ended at last in those stitches, that have since been combined ia to the fabric called lace. Excerpt from The Successful Embroidery Shop: A Book That Deals With Art Needlework as a Business A good many years ago when fate directed my steps toward the realms of art embroidery, I searched through libraries and book stores for a guide, some sort of handbook or anything that would give definite instructions and information concerning my new trade. But my efforts were in vain - there was nothing, absolutely no book on the market that would tell me a word about the right way to supply the demands of the embroidering public. This condition naturally told me that whatever success I might achieve would be through my own experiences, and consequently I kept my eyes wide open. Sharpen up your needlework and tighten your stitching techniques with this detailed and highly effective instruction book. Those looking for how to improve their embroidery skills should dive straight in. Art in Needlework: A Book About Embroidery is an instructional originally published in 1900 and written by Lewis F. Day and Mary Buckle. As the name suggests, this book is all about the techniques and materials one must master in order to become an expert in the art of embroidery. Art in Needlework begins with a series of chapters on specific stitches used in embroidery. From canvas and crewel stiches to herringbone and buttonhole stitches, all of the basics and a great deal of the advanced stitches are detailed here. Large black and white images accompany the text, greatly assisting those who are oriented more towards visual learning. The book progresses from a detailed description of specific stitches to a discussion of the decisions faced by an embroiderer and the big-picture techniques to be used. Chapters focus on selecting the appropriate stitch, creating outlines, shading techniques, and much more. In the author's own words: "The custom has been, since woman learnt to kill time with the needle, to think of embroidery too much as an idle accomplishment. It is more than that. At the very least it is a handicraft: at the best it is an art... [This book] sets forth to show what decorative stitching is, how it is done, and what it can do." Excerpt from Needlework Without "Specimens" The Modern Book of School Needlework AS many books dealing exhaustively with needlework are already in existence, some apology seems needed for the present work, or, at all events, some explanation of the attitude towards the subject here adopted. The preparation of the book has been undertaken partly in response to inquiries for a sewing-book on similar lines to Knitting without Specimens, and partly because the plan it suggests has been proved to have an inspiring effect on needlework teaching. Sewing is an occupation which has lately been the subject of much thoughtful inquiry by teachers and educationists generally, and their investigations have resulted in a desire to obtain from the subject more of living interest, of educational value, and of practical utility. The feeling has been steadily growing that a great deal of purposeless work, and far too much time, labour, and material have been expended on working the isolated, monotonous, and abstract exercises known as Specimens. This dreary plan of approaching the subject has not only failed to kindle that permanent interest in. Needlework which alone is the proof of successful teaching, but it has' often also produced an actual distaste for the subject. Further, the educational value of such a plan was almost negligible. The method of teaching was in complete contradiction to the fact that a child thinks in order to do. The girl had no desired goal to reach, no inspiring motive such as the construction of an article interesting to herself, and therefore the need for thought was reduced to a minimum. The Specimen plan was in contradiction, moreover, to the educational maxim that teaching should proceed from the concrete to the abstract, for it ignored the concrete (i e., the actual garment or article), which was within the sphere of the child's understanding and interest, and not only commenced, but frequently ended with a long series of abstract exercises.
