In the start of the book, the narrator is kept inside a high school's gymnasium (The Rachel and Leah Center, informally known as The Red Center) and several other females are also there. Aunt Elizabeth and Aunt Sara serve as guards and discipline them. While these two utilize cattle prods to intimidate, other guards possess guns. The women have to stay in the gym except for the walks they are allowed to take twice a day. The school's field is shielded by barbed wire and male guards known as Angels. Summary of The Handmaid’s Tale - A Comprehensive Summary PART 1: OUR LIVES The novel opens with an unknown Narrator describing her life and the lives of other girls. The reader is told that the United States no longer exists, followed by stories of the past, what women are in the present day, and what rules they have to live by, such as leaving school only twice a day to walk around a football field and not being allowed to talk amongst themselves. Several women discovered a way to communicate to each other by murmuring inaudibly, thus exchanging their names. In the second chapter, the reader learns that the Narrator is a female currently living in a house from the Victorian era. The house, belonging to someone named the Commander and his Wife, is set up in such a way that suicide is not possible for anyone living inside. The Narrator has a special costume that she needs to wear, consisting of a muffling red ensemble, a headdress with a veil, and white wings on the side of her face. The woman goes shopping with tokens that the cook, Rita, gave her to exchange for food. Rita and the housekeeper, Cora, belong to a caste called the Marthas who wear green. It would appear that the Marthas are allowed certain other freedoms, such as the ability to gossip with one another. To be continued... PREVIEW: In an alternative version of America, a neo-conservative, alt-right type terrorist group took over in a coup -- they shot the President, machine-gunned the Congress, got the army to declare a state of emergency, instituted martial law, suspended the Constitution, and instilled a totalitarian theocracy. Although this group claimed their taking over was only temporary, America became the Republic of Gilead. And because they were able to blame a worldwide fertility crisis (in which babies had a one-in-four chance of being born with deformities that would make them unable to survive outside the womb), the Gileadean regime was able to reverse women's rights, claiming it had a solution to the crisis via a return to so-called traditional values. The Commanders of the regime restructured society and restricted women according to reproductive abilities, as well as class status, so that women were prohibited from reading, from holding property, from having jobs and from being independent. Feminists and certain infertile women of low status were classified as "Unwomen," and some were sentenced to labor camps called the Colonies.
