The wound turned septic and he died. Mary Ann was hauled off to Goulburn Gaol and branded a murderer. However, when she was found to be pregnant the authorities decided to wait until the baby was born before sentencing her to hang. Despite outliving him by 68 years, Mary Ann McCracken’s legacy is overshadowed by that of her more famous brother, executed United Irishman Henry Joy McCracken. She was, however, an abolitionist, a social reformer and an activist who fought for the rights of women and Belfast’s poor throughout a long life that encompassed the most turbulent years of Irish history. As treasurer, secretary and chair of the Ladies Committee, she helped girls from the Poor House learn crafts that would provide them with livelihoods. Dedicated to championing Belfast’s poor, she was President of the Ladies Industrial School and she campaigned to abolish the use of climbing boys in chimney sweeping. Mary Ann was involved in early women’s suffrage campaigns and prison reform schemes and was a passionate member of the Women’s Abolitionary Committee. In her late eighties, she could be found on the docks, handing out anti-slavery leaflets to emigrants embarking for the slave-owning United States. The motto of this remarkable woman, which accurately sums up her character, was, better ‘to wear out than to rust out’. But her radical, humanitarian zeal and generous strength of character were indefatigable, and her contribution to Belfast life is still felt and celebrated today.

MARY ANN ANSELL lived and slept in the kitchen of a boarding house in Great Coram Street, Bloomsbury, where she was the sole domestic servant. It was there, in 1899, late in the evening when all was quiet, that she made a cake. First she baked it in the range, and then she spread inside it a layer of cream, which was a curious yellow colour, because it was infused with a special ingredient - phosphorus rat poison. She wrapped it in ordinary brown paper and posted it off anonymously to her sister, poor Caroline, an inmate at Leavesden Asylum. Caroline ate some of the treat at tea-time, and generously shared the rest with her friends on the epilepsy ward. Soon she died in agony and the others were lucky to recover. The donor had not taken them into account. There was strong handwriting evidence and an astute Hertfordshire police detective tracked Mary Ann down and arrested her at her place of work in Bloomsbury. "I am as innocent a girl as ever was born," she protested. Charged with murder, she was tried at Hertfordshire Assizes, where she was convicted and sentenced to be hanged. She was twenty-one years old. Suddenly the case became a national cause célèbre. The Daily Mail mounted a campaign to save her, with reporters going out into the slums of north east Bloomsbury, where the large Ansell family lived in dire poverty, and compiling a dossier on familial mental defect. The author has taken a compassionate view and fully explored the sociological background, as well as the covert reasons for the refusal of mercy. 'Diminished Responsibility' would have rescued Mary Ann Ansell half a century later. She should have been sent to Broadmoor. Some people who begin this study with a firm belief in the rightness of capital punishment for domestic murder may not be so sure by the end.

As well as newspapers, census, contemporary documents such as police reports, I reads Mary Ann Cotton by the late Arthur Appleton (County Durham Books 1973). Mr Appleton's concluded that Mary Ann probably killed 14 or 15 people. Tony Whitehead, whose well documented account Mary Ann Cotton, Dead but not Forgotten, (Self-published. Undated) is presented in rigorous style but in the end almost drifts to the conclusion that Mary Ann was probably guilty at least in three cases. Derek Hebden's Murder at West Auckland, a more summary account (History Snapshot Series 1987), was also useful. But as I read and thought about Mary Ann it dawned on me than by modern standards this case was at least unproven. Interestingly Appleton comments that in some programmes put out by the BBC in 1975 the actress playing Mary Ann found her role difficult because she believed Mary Ann to be innocent. Well researched as they are, in all these writers' accounts, impression and dramatic second-hand commentary tend to be used in the absence of truly substantive and connective evidence. In the end it seems that whether Mary Ann was guilty or innocent appears still to be a matter of belief. Tellingly, Appleton says in his conclusion The Mary Ann Cotton family spanned the lifetime of the Durham Coalfield. The underworld of coal was explored and known far better than the underworld mind of Mary Ann Cotton. In writing this novel I was inspired by the thought that perhaps the 'underworld mind' of Mary Ann Cotton might be further explored through the richer, more sinewy medium of fiction, which uses contemporary human insight into the rather thin available facts. In the year I wrote this I came to feel her around me, at my shoulder, cheering me on.
