Oh, Canada: a nation of hockey players, trailer park boys, and doughnut shop habitues; a nation that can claim Marshall McLuhan, Pamela Anderson, and Mr Dressup as among their own. Canada is one complex country all right, and what better way to document its character than an atlas of Canadian place names as compiled by Geist, the magazine of Canadian ideas and culture? This offbeat yet erudite collection of full-colour maps--many (but not all) of which have appeared in the magazine since 1995--includes a wide range of clearly Canadian subject matter from all points far and wide. The Meat Map of Canada features T-Bone Glacier, Yukon, Pork and Bean Point, Manitoba, and Burgerville, Ontario; the Angst Map of Canada locates Doom Mountain, BC, Dismal Creek, Alberta, and Port Disappointment, Newfoundland; and the Money Map of Canada lists Success, Saskatchewan, Silver Lake, Ontario, and Lac Spendet, Quebec. Each map is accompanied by the stories behind specific place names as well as fast and furious Canadian facts and trivia. The net result is a tongue-in-cheek snapshot of the essential Canadian character, in all its quirky glory. Other map subjects include: Apocalypse; Art; Atwood (Margaret); Automotive; Beer; Body Parts; Condiments; Doughnuts; Erotica; Gay and Lesbian; Hockey; International; Kitchen Implements; Literary; Loudmouths; Malls; Menstrual; Pets; Retail; Sartorial; and World's Largest. With an introduction by Geist editor Stephen Osborne.

The End And The Beginning written by Hermynia Zur Mühlen and has been published by Open Book Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

First published in Germany in 1929, The End and the Beginning is a lively personal memoir of a vanished world and of a rebellious, high-spirited young woman's struggle to achieve independence. Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Muhlen spent much of her childhood travelling in Europe and North Africa with her diplomat father. After five years on her German husband's estate in czarist Russia she broke with both her family and her husband and set out on a precarious career as a professional writer committed to socialism. Besides translating many leading contemporary authors, notably Upton Sinclair, into German, she herself published an impressive number of politically engaged novels, detective stories, short stories, and children's fairy tales. Because of her outspoken opposition to National Socialism, she had to flee her native Austria in 1938 and seek refuge in England, where she died, virtually penniless, in 1951. This revised and corrected translation of Zur Muhlen's memoir - with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman - will appeal especially to readers interested in women's history, the Central European aristocratic world that came to an end with the First World War, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Did you know that the father of psychoanalysis believed in ghosts, or that Frederick Engels attended seances? Ghosts: Deconstruction, Psychoanalysis, History is the first collection of theoretical essays to evaluate these facts and consider the importance of the metaphor of haunting as it has appeared in literature, culture, and philosophy. Haunting is considered as both a literal and figurative term that encapsulates social anxieties and concerns. The collection includes discussions of nineteenth-century spiritualism, gothic and postcolonial ghost stories, and popular film, with essays on important theoretical writers including Freud, Derrida, Adorno, and Walter Benjamin.

Political Parties written by Robert Michels and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1968 with Business & Economics categories.

In this book Michels analyzes the tendencies that oppose the realization of democracy, and claims that these tendencies can be classified in three ways: dependence upon the nature of the individual; dependence upon the nature of the political structure; and dependence upon the nature of organization. This edition, described by Morris Janowitz as a "classic of modern social science" and by Melvin Tumin as "the beginning of a tradition", offers a landmark study in political science. Following its original publication in 1910, the study and analysis of political parties was established as a new branch of science. Political Parties continues to be a foundation work in the literature and is a necessary addition to the libraries of contemporary political scientists, sociologists, and historians. As a dutiful Victorian daughter, the author was thirty before being freed (by her parents' deaths) to do as she chose. She went to West Africa in 1893 and again in 1895, to investigate the beliefs and customs of the inland tribes and also to collect zoological specimens. She was appalled by the 'thin veneer of rubbishy white culture' imposed by British officials and was not afraid to say so.
