The Hawk of Yonezawa is a short novel, or novella, about the fictional adventures of Johann Sebastian Bach who is transported to the island of Japan. Bach is on a rare trip outside his world of Leipzig, Germany, a little after the year 1742. The coach breaks down and he misses the concert that would have featured George Frederic Handel performing his own works. On the return trip he meets a twelve-year-old boy and his young mother. They find that he knows how to play the organ and so they invite him to fix the one at their church. Bach refuses graciously, but once more the stagecoach breaks down, and Bach is transported in a dream with the boy and his mother to Japan, where he is beset with adventures while trying to fix the local church organ. This novella is written for a general, religious and musically inquisitive audience. It is family fare, suitable also for high school and college readers.

This second book by James McKean displays a large, dignified, and precise talent—McKean is always looking and reaching out to the difficult world, pulling it to him for examination. Although beginning with outward themes of travels and crossings, Tree of Heaven circles in the end to the journeys of the inner life: the struggle to understand, the ability to see, to suffer the trials of illness and death, to survive love and longing, learning when to leave things as they are, when to let go. McKean's accomplished voice is quiet but firm, at times full of wonder, exploring the personal and discovering what salvation there is in rhythm and words.

The hawk was Cole Hawkins Indian totem, his naming clan. He always looked for them as he rode. Their presence brought him peace and the promise of prosperity. Coles journey begins when he is a young man. His travels take him from the battlefields of Waterloo, to England, and then, ultimately, to the foreign plains of America. He begins his American adventure in New York but eventually finds his way to the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, following the course of the hawks that fly above. He meets many people over the course of his travels. The Native Americans seem welcoming and kind, but Cole is surprised to find whites suspicious and strange. Then again, people come in all sorts. Cole is forced to grow up fast. He makes friends, meets women, and seeks his fortune in a new land. He is a brave adventurer, searching for a future in early nineteenth century America. He is not alone. There are many others who travel the same path. Through it all, Cole never forgets his namesake hawks that watch his every step from the sky.
