A light-hearted look at an extremely serious subject, The Hazards of Life and All That: A Look at Some Accidents and Safety Curiosities, Past and Present, Third Edition presents numerous examples of accidents throughout history and around the world, drawn from a wide range of contemporary sources. Illustrated with high-quality cartoons, this historical anthology addresses important issues affecting humans while presenting them in a humorous, accessible style. The author relates anecdotes from the gentleman struck, even in death, by lightning to the ICI invention of WATER, a cheap resource for quenching fires. The anecdotes contain salutary reminders on the precautions one should take to secure a long and healthy life.

This is the first detailed study of the standard of living of ordinary Russians following World War II. It examines urban living conditions under the Stalinist regime with a focus on the key issues of sanitation, access to safe water supplies, personal hygiene and anti-epidemic controls, diet and nutrition, and infant mortality. Comparing five key industrial regions, it shows that living conditions lagged some fifty years behind Western European norms. The book reveals that, despite this, the years preceding Stalin's death saw dramatic improvements in mortality rates thanks to the application of rigorous public health controls and Western medical innovations. While tracing these changes, the book also analyzes the impact that the absence of an adequate urban infrastructure had on people's daily lives and on the relationship between the Stalinist regime and the Russian people, and, finally, how the Soviet experience compared to that of earlier industrializing societies.

These short stories in Life Style Hazards were written by Just Plain (jumps to conclusions) Jim, all started with truth that comically went off course. There is more truth in these stories than Just Plain (imaginative) Jim wants to admit. The little deviation from the truth is often truth in itself. The stories were picked from little incidents that happened while the author was growing up in the Blackjack Hills, during and coming out of the great depression, when moving to town, going through school, and living life with its dos, donts, and maybes.

Organized into five inter-related sections, this Handbook contains sixty-five contributions from leading scholars. Section two contains treatments of potentially damaging natural events/phenomena organized by major earth system. Afraid of flying? Forty percent of Americans are. Yet you'd have to fly every day for the next 26,000 years to assure yourself of dying in a crash. A leisurely canoe ride is more than 100 times deadlier. Think city streets are unsafe? You're more likely to come to harm in your own home, where every year you stand a 1 in 650 chance of being injured by your bed, mattress, or pillows—and each year 800 Americans die in accidents involving soft furnishings. We live in a world governed by fear, where packets of peanuts "may contain nuts" and children must be ever on the alert to "stranger danger." And yet, life expectancy has never been higher. Crime rates have plunged. Even unintentional injuries are down. So if we're so safe, why are we so afraid? How to Live Dangerously is a hilarious, straight-talking look at the things that terrify us. It considers life's real risks, not to mention the often ridiculous methods we've contrived to keep ourselves "safe." It encourages you to ignore fearmongers and embrace a new kind of freedom, in which we all worry a little less—and live a whole lot more.
