This dissertation focuses on the healing of the blind Bartimaeus in Mark 10:46-52. Because early questions arose out of the Historical and theological methods as they were applied to the Bartimaeus narrative, this dissertation addresses both the Historical and theological concerns of the earlier research. Though these questions are important and occupy a part of this dissertation, this dissertation does not focus solely on Historical issues, but reads the text as a narrative with plot, setting, characters, conflict, and standards of judgment, and render a fresh reading of the narrative using Narrative Criticism. My thesis is that through the asking and overcoming of Bartimaeus, Bartimaeus lines up with God's standard of judgment and Rule in the narrative of Mark. As a suppliant in Mark, Bartimaeus succeeds where the disciples have largely failed. He thus becomes an exemplar and serves a symbolic function for the restoration of the disciples. Through a consideration of this episode using Narrative Criticism, the goal is to gain a clearer understanding not only of this story, but also of Mark's Gospel as a whole.

This dissertation is a practical example of predominantly synchronical exegesis of Mark's gospel as practised in recent years. It is about the healing of Bartimaeus (Mk 10,46-52) in its Markan context. The larger context comprises of Mark 8.27-10.52. The immediate context began with the third prediction of Jesus' suffering, death and resurrection and ended in the Bartimaeus' episode (10,32-52). Very prominent in this immediate context is the request of James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, for places of honour in the Kingdom of Jesus (10,35-45), and this forms a contrast to that of Bartimaeus who asked only to see. Much efforts were taken to work out this constrasting feature, and this has added vigour to the thesis.

Left Behind and Loving It is a cheeky critique of popular writings about the end times. Rather than presenting a steroid-buffed Jesus wrapped in an American flag and "coming again in clouds of gunfire," Left Behind and Loving It invites readers to approach some of the most controversial and scary portions of the Scriptures with the utter confidence that "God's steadfast love endures forever." Rather than asserting a hope premised on a few chosen ones escaping the world, Left Behind and Loving It argues that if it is Jesus who is to return (and not his evil twin), then the second coming has redemption written all over it. Many today cannot accept the escapist, violent, end-of-the-world scenario envisioned by "Left Behind" theology. Left Behind and Loving It invites readers not to fear but to trust in God's steadfast love and look at the finitude of the world with hope in an infinitely loving God.

The Gospel Of Mark written by John R. Donahue and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Religion categories.

In The Gospel of Mark Fathers Donahue and Harrington use an approach that can be expressed by two terms currently used in literary criticism: intratextuality and intertextuality. This intratextual and intertextual reading of Mark's Gospel helps us to appreciate the literary character, its setting in life, and its distinctive approaches to the Old Testament, Jesus, and early Christian theology. "Intratextuality" means we read Mark as Mark and by Mark. Such a reading expresses interest in the final form of the Gospel (not its source or literary history) and in its words and images, literary devices, literary forms, structures, characterization, and plot. Reading Mark by Mark gives particular attention to the distinctive vocabulary and themes that run throughout the Gospel and serve to hold it together as a unified literary production. "Intertextuality" comprises the relation between texts and a textual tradition, and also referring to contextual materials not usually classified as texts (e.g., archaeological data). "Intertextuality" is used to note the links of the text of Mark's Gospel to other texts (especially the Old Testament) and to the life of the Markan community and of the Christian community today.

Lucky written by Glenn Packiam and has been published by David C Cook this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03-01 with Religion categories.

Glenn Packiam redefines the word lucky in the context of Jesus’ beatitudes in Luke’s Gospel. Lucky uncovers how the poor, hungry, mourning and persecuted are blessed because the Kingdom of heaven—its fullness, comfort, and reward—is theirs in spite of their condition. This is Christ’s announcement: the Kingdom of God has come to unlikely people. Like the people Jesus addressed, we are called lucky not because of our pain or brokenness but because in spite of it, we have been invited into the Kingdom. The trajectory of our lives have been altered. What’s more, we now have a part in the future that God is bringing. Like Abraham, we have been blessed to carry blessing, to live as luck-bearers to the unlikely and unlucky.
