Excerpt from The Hellenic Origins of Christian Asceticism 2tures Of Christian asceticism by invoking Greek parallels Zeller tried to explain the ascetic movement among the Chris tians of the first centuries as a survival of Cynicism;4 many years later Weingarten attempted to derive Christian mo nastieism from an ascetic cult which he had found in the temple of Serapis at Memphis;5 Reitzenstein, approaching the subject from the point of view of comparative literature, has more recently shown the influence which the contempo rary aretologies had upon the early stories Of Christian monks.6 But these writers have only dwelt upon certain sides of the subject: if they attempted to generalize, as Wein garten did, and held that they had discovered the true and only source of Christian asceticism, their conclusions were wholly false.7 The trouble was that there has been, up 'to' the present, no rounded picture of the asceticism of the Greeks at the time, and consequently when scholars noticed resem blances between early Christian ascetics and the Cynics, or the recluses of the Serapeum, or some other special cult, they at once concluded that they had found the source Of the Christian ascetic movement, for they completely ignored the other Greek forms of asceticism then prevalent. It is the purpose of the present study, then, to attempt to draw such a picture of Greek asceticism as will enable others to see to exactly how great an extent the Christians were dependent Upon the Greeks for their ascetic ideas and ideals; it is the intention to give a rounded picture of Greek asceticism in the various forms in which it appeared at the time of the spread of Christianity. But no attempt will be made to show how these ideas were transferred into Christianity, or to write of early Christian asceticism: that would be too large a subject. Daniele Pevarello analyzes the Sentences of Sextus, a second century collection of Greek aphorisms compiled by Sextus, an otherwise unknown Christian author. The specific character of Sextus' collection lies in the fact that the Sentences are a Christian rewriting of Hellenistic sayings, some of which are still preserved in pagan gnomologies and in Porphyry. Pevarello investigates the problem of continuity and discontinuity between the ascetic tendencies of the Christian compiler and aphorisms promoting self-control in his pagan sources. In particular, he shows how some aspects of the Stoic, Cynic, Platonic and Pythagorean moral traditions, such as sexual restraint, voluntary poverty, the practice of silence and of a secluded life were creatively combined with Sextus' ascetic agenda against the background of the biblical tradition. Drawing on this adoption of Hellenistic moral traditions, Pevarello shows how great a part the moral tradition of Greek paideia played in the shaping and development of self-restraint among early Christian ascetics.

The call to repentance is central to the message of early Christianity. While this is undeniable, the precise meaning of the concept of repentance for early Christians has rarely been investigated to any great extent, beyond studies of the rise of penitential discipline. In this study, the rich variety of meanings and applications of the concept of repentance are examined, with a particular focus on the writings of several ascetic theologians of the fifth to seventh centuries: SS Mark the Monk, Barsanuphius and John of Gaza, and John Climacus. These theologians provide some of the most sustained and detailed elaborations of the concept of repentance in late antiquity. They predominantly see repentance as a positive, comprehensive idea that serves to frame the whole of Christian life, not simply one or more of its parts. While the modern dominant understanding of repentance as a moment of sorrowful regret over past misdeeds, or as equivalent to penitential discipline, is present to a degree, such definitions by no means exhaust the concept for them. The path of repentance is depicted as stretching from an initial about-face completed in baptism, through the living out of the baptismal gift by keeping the Gospel commandments, culminating in the idea of intercessory repentance for others, after the likeness of Christ's innocent suffering for the world. While this overarching role for repentance in Christian life is clearest in ascetic works, these are not explored in isolation, and attention is also paid to the concept of repentance in Scripture, the early church, apocalyptic texts, and canonical material. This not only permits the elaboration of the views of the ascetics in their larger context, but further allows for an overall re-assessment of the often misunderstood, if not overlooked, place of repentance in early Christian theology.

Evagrius of Pontus (c.345-399) was one of the most prominent figures among the monks of the desert settlements of Nitria, Sketis, and Kellia in Lower Egypt. Through the course of his ascetic writings he formulated a systematic presentation of the teaching of the semi-eremitic monks of these settlements. The works of Evagrius had a profound influence on Eastern Orthodox monastic teaching and passed to the West through the writings of John Cassian (c.365-435). This is the first complete English translation of Evagrius' Greek ascetic writings, based on modern critical editions, where available, and, where they are not, on collations of the principal manuscripts. Two appendices provide variant readings for the Greek texts and the complete text of the long recension of Eulogios. The translations are accompanied by a commentary to guide the reader through the intricacies of Evagrian thought by offering explanatory comments and references to other Evagrian texts and relevant scholarly literature. Finally, detailed indexes are provided to allow the reader to identify and study the numerous themes of Evagrian teaching.
