Excerpt from The Helper and American Trade Unions: Dissertation Submitted to the Board of University, Studies of the Johns Hopkins University, in Conformity With the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy This monograph is the outgrowth of investigations carried on by the author while a member of the economic seminary of the Johns Hopkins University. The chief documentary sources of information have been the trade union publications of the Johns Hopkins Library. Documentary information, however, has been supplemented by personal observations and interviews with lead ing trade unionists in Baltimore, and with the secretaries of a number of national unions. Originally published in 1965. In A Baronial Family in Medieval England: The Clares, 1217–1314, Michael Altschul studies the Clare family during the thirteenth century. The Clares spearheaded the struggle to enforce Magna Carta in the Barons' War. Historians prior to Altschul tended to neglect the Clares' history given the scattered nature of the archives documenting their time as a politically influential and powerful family. This book unfolds chronologically, outlining the Clares' rise to preeminence and describing how they administered their estates and income.

Elbeuf During The Revolutionary Period written by Jeffry Kaplow and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-01 with History categories.

Originally published in 1964. Jeffry Kaplow investigates the effects of the French Revolution on life in Elbeuf, a textile town in Normandy, through a social-historical lens. A careful study of local demographic, fiscal, and tax records allows him to reconstruct the social structure of Elbeuf's population on the eve of the French Revolution and to make claims about its economy, which was based on wool production. Somewhat unusually, there was no strong noble or clerical presence in Elbeuf, which was dominated by wool manufacturers. Despite the destabilizing effects of the Revolution, which included an economic downturn and an inflamed sense of grievance among less wealthy local constituencies, the bourgeoisie retained its grip on power in Elbeuf and its environs throughout this period. With the support of extensive archival evidence, Kaplow goes to great lengths to model the particular social and economic conditions that allowed this town to avoid succumbing to the tumult of the Revolution and to undergo, in fact, so little change compared with most municipalities of the country.

Excerpt from The Helper and American Trade Unions A helper, as the term is used in this study, is a person employed to help the skilled journeyman or journeymen under whose supervision he works. The essential marks Of a helper as here defined are two: first, he is employed to promote the work of another; second, he is supervised in his work to some extent by the mechanic whom he assists. The kind of assistance rendered and the extent of the super vision exercised vary considerably in different Classes Of helpers. A helper's assistance to a journeyman may be as remote as that Of supplying material to another, or as im mediate as that Of working hand to hand with another at all times. The supervision exercised by a journeyman over a helper may extend no farther than the giving Of directions as to the placing of material, or it may be so close that the helper does no work for which he is not responsible to the mechanic who is directing him. Distinguished with respect to the nature Of the work done and the relation borne to journeymen in the perform ance Of work, helpers may be roughly divided into three classes: (i) remote helpers, (2) helpers proper, and (3) advanced helpers. All or none Of these classes may be found in a single trade. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Labor History Reader celebrates the first quarter century of the premier journal in its field and provides the richest available source of contemporary thought on American labor history. The result is not only a revealing look at the history of American labor but also a better understanding of our changing attitudes toward that history.''The list of authors in The Labor History Reader reads like an honor roll of the most distinguished labor historians in the United States. The volume itself is excellent in chronological scope, wide-ranging in subjects treated, and representative of the main currents of thought which stimulate the writing of American working class history today.'' -- Maurice F. Neufeld, professor of labor and industrial relations, Cornell University

Between Craft And Class written by Jeffrey Haydu and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-10 with History categories.

Between Craft and Class provides an incisive new look at workers' responses to the momentous economic changes surrounding them in the early years of the twentieth century. In this work, Haydu focuses on the reaction of skilled metal workers to new production methods that threatened time-honored craft traditions. He finds that the workers' responses to industrial change varied—some defended the status quo, while others agreed to trade customary rules for economic rewards. Under some conditions class protest arose, as workers of diverse skills and trades joined to demand a greater voice in the management of industry. Between Craft and Class explores how broadly based movements for workers' control developed during this critical period, and why they ultimately failed. Comparing workers in the United States and Britain, Haydu's scholarship is distinguished by extensive primary source research and provocative theoretical insights. In its scope and depth, this book will revise current notions of craft politics and working-class radicalism during this period.
