This edited volume highlights the latest advances in and findings from research on service automation in public sector organizations. In 1966-67 Martin Heidegger and Eugen Fink conducted an extraordinary seminar on the fragments of Heraclitus. Heraclitus Seminar records those conversations, documenting the imaginative and experimental character of the multiplicity of interpretations offered and providing an invaluable portrait of Heidegger involved in active discussion and explication. Heidegger's remarks in this seminar illuminate his interpretations not only of pre-Socratic philosophy, but also of figures such as Hegel and Holderllin. At the same time, Heidegger clarifies many late developments in his own understanding of truth, Being, and understanding. Heidegger and Fink, both deeply rooted in the Freiburg phenomenological tradition, offer two competing approaches to the phenomenological reading of the ancient text-a kind of reading that, as Fink says, is "not so much concerned with the philological problematic ... as with advancing into the matter itself, that is, toward the matter that must have stood before Heraclitus's spiritual view."

Heraklits Denken und seine philosophischen Positionen haben einen ungeheuren Einfluss im Altertum, in der Neuzeit und bis in die Moderne hinein ausgeübt. Alle Beiträge gehen auf eine internationale Konferenz zurück, die im Oktober 2013 ausgewiesene Spezialisten zu einem umfassenden Dialog in Ephesos zusammenführte. Im Zusammenwirken verschiedener Disziplinen ließ sich Heraklits Ort in der Philosophie- und Geistesgeschichte genauer bestimmen, als das in den bisher vorwiegend auf philosophiehistorisch-philologische Aspekte fokussierten Darstellungen geschehen ist. Das Alleinstellungsmerkmal der Konferenz in ihrer Orientierung am genius loci und auch die damit einhergehende Einbeziehung historischer und archäologischer Fragestellungen bedeutet etwas Neues für die Heraklit-Forschung: Das Aufzeigen der Verbindungen zwischen der naturräumlichen Situation in Ephesos zur Zeit Heraklits, dem Verhältnis des Denkers zu seiner Stadt sowie der Rolle seiner Reflexion auf die Bedingungen menschlicher Erkenntnis und ihrer Vermittlung.

In der älteren Tradition wird Heraklit zu den Naturphilosophen gezählt, doch sein Denken grenzt sich vom reinen Ansammeln von Wissensmaterial und den kosmologischen Spekulationen der ionischen Naturphilosophen ab. Heraklit distanziert sich vom allgemein erfahrbaren Wissen und geht mit Hilfe der konsequenten Rückkehr zu sich selber der Erkenntnissuche nach. Die anhand einer Reihe ausgewählter Fragmente durchgeführte Untersuchung erbringt neu den Nachweis, wie Heraklit eine klare Pädagogik vorschreibt, die in manchen Aspekten spätere philosophische Denkformen vorausnimmt. Im Rahmen seiner Paideia gibt er Anweisungen zur Lebenseinstellung und zum ethischen Verhalten, welche angehende Schüler befähigen sollen, nach dem Logos zu suchen. Bei dieser Suche nach dem Logos in der eigenen Psyche begegnet er dem Logos der Welt. Heraklits Wirklichkeitsvorstellung entsteht aus der Wende nach innen, aufgrund derer eine nicht inhaltlich neue Kosmologie sondern ein von einer veränderten Perspektive her betrachteter Kosmos sichtbar wird. Die so verstandene Weisheitssuche bildetet in der griechischen Gedankenwelt ein Novum: denn erst Heraklit formte die Auffassung von Philosophie als systematische Suche, welche mit der Rückwendung auf sich selber zur Erkenntnis der kosmischen Wirklichkeit gelangt.
