Longlisted for the CWA Gold Dagger 2021 How does the saying go? Just because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you . . . For Ruth, a new mother recovering from postpartum psychosis, every day is difficult and, after months spent hearing voices in the walls and trusting no one, she’s no longer confident in her own judgement. Neither, it seems, is anyone else. So, when she hears a scream from the local petrol station one night, she initially decides it must be her mind playing tricks again. The police, too, are polite but firm: she must stop calling them every time she thinks she hears something. And her husband is frustrated: he’d hoped Ruth was getting better at last. Ruth can’t quite let it go . . . What if there was a scream? What if it was someone in trouble? Someone who needs Ruth’s help? Exploring the dark and isolating side of motherhood, the question at the heart of Rebecca Whitney's The Hidden Girls is how much you can help someone else when you can’t trust anyone – even yourself . . .

The lights of her parents' cabin just visible through the woods, the girl carefully curls up amongst the reeds, her knees pulled tight to her chest. Terrified, the only sound she makes is the pounding of her heart, but she hears the stranger searching... if she keeps silent, will she be safe? When Agent Tori Hunter is urgently called to the murder scene of Dan and Heidi Newman, she finds their throats slit, and Dan tied up: forced to watch his wife lose her life. Tori's first thought is for their seventeen-year-old daughter Cara who is nowhere to be found. Will this popular young girl be the next victim? A broken bracelet is the one clue left at the scene, but the team are running in circles until Tori finally tracks down Cara hiding in the woods. Sobbing, the devastated girl says all she remembers is a flash of a man's face as she was chased through the forest... Desperate to find the monster behind this crime, Tori pieces together the broken chain: and it leads her to an elderly lady living alone nearby. When the woman won't speak to police, Tori senses that although it means breaking all the rules, introducing Cara will show this lonely soul what's at stake. And once inside her house, Cara gasps when she sees a framed photo on display. It's the man who chased her... But then another local couple is murdered in their isolated home, another husband forced to watch his worst nightmare unfold. As more couples lose their lives, can Tori keep Cara, her one witness, safe from this vicious killer? And can she track him down before more innocent families are torn apart? The Hidden Girl written by Marika Henriques and has been published by Shepheard-Walwyn Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Psychology categories.

Marika Henriques was born in Budapest in 1935. During the Holocaust in 1944, separated from her family, she became a hidden child. That being a Jew was shameful and had to be hidden remained deeply etched into her being for decades. Fascism was followed by communism after the war. Persecuted once more, now for her middle class background, she escaped during the Hungarian uprising in 1956. She crossed the border on foot through mine fields in temperatures of minus 25 degrees centigrade. She arrived as a refugee in England and married a Swedish Jew in 1961. In due course she found her vocation and became a Jungian psychotherapist. Jung's ideas were an integral part of the process of understanding herself and after undergoing psychoanalysis, drawings and poems poured out of her as part of the healing process. The drawings emerged unbidden and were drawn quickly, without fully under-standing what they signified. But over the years she has stitched 19 of them as tapestries. The gentler pace of stitching was all a part of the healing process, and they are woven together with the drawings and poems in the book as she unfolds her story.
