Is Saudi Arabia really a homogeneous Wahhabi dominated state? In 1932 the Al Saud family incorporated the kingdom of Hijaz, once the cultural hub of the Arabian world, in to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The urban, cosmopolitan Hijazis were absorbed in to a new state whose codes of behavior and rules were determined by the Najdis, an ascetic desert people, from whom the Al Saud family came. But the Saudi rulers failed to fully integrate the Hijaz, which retains a distinctive identity to this day. In "Cradle of Islam", the product of years spent in Mecca, Medina, Jeddah and Taif, Mai Yamani traces the fortunes of the distinctive and resilient culture of the Hijazis, from the golden age of Hashemite Mecca to Saudi domination to its current resurgence. The Hijazis today emphasise their regional heritage in religious ritual, food, dress and language as a response to the 'Najdification' of everyday life. The Hijazi experience shows the vitality of cultural diversity in the face of political repression in the Arab world.

The Hijaz written by Malik Dahlan and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-01 with Religion categories.

Dahlan offers an alternative vision of Islamic governance through the history and promise of the Hijaz, the first state of Islam. The Hijaz, in the west of present-day Saudi Arabia, was the first Islamic state in Mecca and Medina. This new interpretative history offers a fresh vision of Islamic governance and law as a positive force for political reform in the Middle East and beyond. Applying key Islamic principles of public good to contemporary life, Malik Dahlan challenges two dominant narratives. He reclaims the development of Islamic statecraft as the wellspring of collective identity and statesmanship in the Arab world, simultaneously influenced and disrupted by Westphalian statehood models and Enlightenment notions of self-determination. He equally rejects the appropriation of Islamic governance and the Caliphate concept by both the post-modern, non-territorial Al-Qaeda and the neo-medievalist ISIS. Celebrating the history and untapped potential of a region where Arab leaders built the ideological foundations of an emerging polity, The Hijaz is a compelling alternative analysis of governance in the Arabian Peninsula and the global Islamic community, and of its interaction with the wider world.

This text offers an alternative vision of Islamic governance through the history and promise of The Hijaz, the first state of Islam. The Hijaz, in the west of present-day Saudi Arabia, was the first Islamic state in Mecca and Medina. This new interpretative international legal history examines two formative historical passages, a millennium apart, of Islamic statehood during the 7th century and, the other, goes back to the origins of Arab Self-Determination in the aftermath of the 1916 Arab Revolt where The Hijaz enjoyed autonomy as well as founding membership of the League of Nations.

The Hijaz written by Malik R. Dhalan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-15 with categories.

The western territory of the Arabian Peninsula, the Hijaz is home to the two holy cities of Makkah and Medina and hosts millions of Muslim pilgrims annually. This book explores the legal history of the Hijaz, which has hitherto remained relatively hidden but which provides fascinating insights on the creation, failure, and afterlife of states. Malik R. Dhalan focuses on the Hijaz as a region with a significant history of Arab self-determination. Tracing the origins of Islamic statehood back a thousand years, he shows how the Hijaz offers a model of the ideal state of Islam. Then, looking at Arab Revolt of 1916 and the short life of the Kingdom of Hijaz, he examines the ways in which autonomy and international participation intertwine to create modern states, exploring the tensions between these two forces as they can be seen in the modern Middle East, especially in countries such as Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. Reflecting on the current ills of the region and the very real danger of regional collapse--as well as the dangers of maintaining the status quo--Dhalan ultimately makes a compelling case for the Hijaz as an integrative solution for some of the Middle East's territorial conflicts.
