Excerpt from The Hills O' Hampshire Hampshire, was, as it is to-day, one of the prettiest villages in all New England. The principal homes are on the one, long, wide street, where the great elms and maples form an arch overhead, as though to kiss, with lips of leaves, in the verdant Spring, or to shake their bare arms angrily in the stern severity of Winter. The large, old-fashioned houses are set well back from the street, each surrounded by well-tended flower beds, syringas and sunflower hedges. Most of the houses were painted white, but green blinds relieved the monotony, the taste of the owner being in evidence, in his selection of what he considered really the proper green. White picket fences sur rounded them and, all in all, it was perhaps the most typical New England village in the Hills 0' Hamp shire. Excerpt from Hampshire It might, perchance, have been better if the writing of these pages had fallen to the lot of a native of the county; but, possibly, a frequent visitor is in a better position to form unprejudiced opinions. At all events I yield to no resident in my general admiration of a county whose manifold and diversified charms grow more attractive on each succeeding visit. Hampshire is a county that has hitherto been somewhat underrated among the great majority of Englishmen who claim to know their own country, as well as among American visitors to their fatherland. Excerpt from Wild Life in Hampshire Highlands The house stands in a small park or clearing in the midst of the great oak and hazel woods which climb steadily up one of those rounded chalk-hills that, alternating with broad and sweeping valleys, form such familiar features of our North Hampshire scenery. A home built in the centre of dense and secluded woodlands miles from a town, almost miles from a village - should it not be a paradise for the lover of the wild life and sports which have such a hold on the affections of English country people? It is one of the objects of this volume to try and show that in a home like this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Folk-Lore Sketches and Reminiscences of New Hampshire Life Her outlook on life, cheerful and deep searching, must have taken on the breadth of beauty and range of vision learned from a study of those enchanting Campton Hills where she grew up and studiedthe deeper lessons of life. Whatever she did was done with a consciousness of having put her whole self into it, making well-developed and finished work, worthy to live after and still speak for her. In her home she filled her place with affectionate concern for hus band and son, always their companion and helper, and in the larger political life she wielded a strong influence, always cheerful, uplifting and for good. Excerpt from A Legend of the White Hills: And Other Poems A Legend of the White Hills. Amid thy hills, New Hampshire, I have strayed, And wandered by thy brightly flowing streams; Have rested in the deep primeval shade Of ancient forests, where the struggling beams Of sunlight scarcely pierced the leafy screen Above my head; and when the cuckoo's wing Or squirrel's foot disturbed the silent scene With sounds of life, my busy thoughts would bring Back to their ancient haunts the red men bold, And prowling beasts of prey that walked these woods of old. Ah, many a wild and spirit-stirring tale These rocks and hills, if they could speak, might tell; For deeds of blood, which make the cheek turn pale With horror, have been wrought, where now we dwell About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
