75 years ago, the explosion at Lakehurst marked a dramatic end to the Golden Days of Lighter-than-Air. The crash of LZ-129 "Hindenburg" was the first disaster to be documented in pictures (one photographer even had Kodak color slide film, which had been developed one year prior), filmed by several national camera teams and recorded on records with the famous words of reporter Herb Morrison. For it's short existence, the LZ-129 "Hindenburg" was the largest, most luxurious flying object, that mankind ever built. The cheer size, of an airship that was three football fields long and over 16 stories tall, dwarfs our imagination of anything we have ever seen fly. Even the new Airbus A-380 or the advertising blimps of today, such as the Zeppelin NT, the largest airship operating today can not compare. The 25 such airships would fit inside the "Hindenburg". The passengers were offered a spacious social rooms, a music room with piano, a writing room, sleeping quarters with running hot and cold running water, a shower, a bar in which one could even smoke (despite the flammable hydrogen gas), and even real china and silverware, with fresh cooked meals provided three times a day. No aircraft today, can offer compare. This book covers in detail, the construction, early test flights and later regular passenger flights up until that fateful day. The appendix includes not only a short list of all these flights, but also includes the most complete passenger list ever compiled. Yet, faith in superior technology was short lived. Just like the passenger ship, "Titantic", a quarter century prior; the "Hindenburg" marked yet another disaster that would shake that faith and remain embedded in our memories.

Here is the story of airshipsÑmanmade flying machines without wingsÑfrom their earliest beginnings to the modern era of blimps. In postcards and advertisements, the sleek, silver, cigar-shaped airships, or dirigibles, were the embodiment of futuristic visions of air travel. They immediately captivated the imaginations of people worldwide, but in less than fifty years dirigibleÊbecame a byword for doomed futurism, an Icarian figure of industrial hubris. Dirigible Dreams looks back on this bygone era, when the future of exploration, commercial travel, and warfare largely involved the prospect of wingless flight. In Dirigible Dreams, C. Michael Hiam celebrates the legendary figures of this promising technology in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuriesÑthe pioneering aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, the doomed polar explorers S. A. AndrŽe and Walter Wellman, and the great Prussian inventor and promoter Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, among otherÊpivotal figuresÑand recounts fascinating stories of exploration, transatlantic journeys, and floating armadas that rained death during World War I. While there were triumphs, such as the polar flight of the Norge, most of these tales are of disaster and woe, culminating in perhaps the most famous disaster of all time, the crash of the Hindenburg. This story of daring men and their flying machines, dreamers and adventurers who pushed modern technology toÑand often beyondÑits limitations, is an informative and exciting mix of history, technology, awe-inspiring exploits, and warfare that will captivate readers with its depiction of a lost golden age of air travel. Readable and authoritative, enlivened by colorful characters and nail-biting drama,ÊDirigible DreamsÊwill appeal to a new generation of general readers and scholars interested in the origins of modern aviation.

Transports Of Delight written by Peter Hancock and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-11 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This inspiring book shows how the spiritual side of life, with its thoughts, feelings, and aspirations, is intimately bound up with our material technologies. From the wonder of Gothic Cathedrals, to the quiet majesty of lighter than air flight, to the ultimate in luxury of the north Atlantic steamers, Peter Hancock explores how these sequential heights of technology have enabled our dreams of being transported to new and uncharted realms to become reality. Sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively, technology has always been there to make material the visions of our imagination. This book shows how this has essentially been true for all technologies from Stonehenge to space station. But technology is far from perfect. Indeed, the author argues here that some of the most public and tragic of its failures still remain instructive, emblematic, and even inspiring. He reports on examples such as a Cathedral of the Earth (Beauvais), a Cathedral of the Seas (Titanic), and a Cathedral of the Air (Hindenburg) and tells their stories from the viewpoint of material transcendence. By interweaving their stories he reveals how technologies can succeed in elevating human beings and, in taking them to whole new realms of being, he explores and explains why these experiences are ‘Transports of Delight.’
