The story of the evolution of Judaism from its origins in the remote past into the complex and various forms by which it is known in the present day does not lend itself to a straightforward historical narrative. The following study attempts to understand how the Second Hebrew Commonwealth came into being and the critical role that Mosaic religion played in the process, which resulted in what may be termed Pharisaic Judaism, which effectively came to an end with the destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans in 70 CE. By the sheer willpower and intellectual ability of the sages who survived the national disaster, Pharisaic Judaism was morphed into Rabbinic Judaism, which ultimately evolved over a period of two millennia into the variety of forms that presently adorn the religious landscape of the Jewish people. Part 1 of this study is concerned with the story of Pharisaic Judaism, which emerged in a period in which the majority of the Jewish people were political factors in the history of the Jewish nation, something that would only emerge once again in the twentieth century with the creation of the modern State of Israel. Ancient Judaea existed in the midst of the region properly known as Cisjordan, the region between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, which constituted the land-bridge between Africa and Asia, through which the more accessible one of the two primary trade and military routes between Egypt and Mesopotamia passed. This made it a critical chunk of territory, the control of which was a constant objective of contending powers throughout the history of the Middle East, and gave Judaea a strategic importance virtually unrelated to its natural resources or wealth. Accordingly, in presenting the story of Pharisaic Judaism, considerable space will be given to the geopolitics and domestic politics in which the Jewish religious authorities necessarily were deeply involved, as is the case today in modern Israel.

The Greater Judaism In The Making written by Mordecai Menahem Kaplan and has been published by New York, Reconstructionist Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1960 with Religion categories.

Throughout history, Judaism has been under attack by other religions, attacks which strengthened the identification of the group as a whole. Modern challenges, however, are coming from different directions, and are producing different results. Jewish identification is declining at the same time as more and more Jewish groups to identify with are rising. Rather than being a disaster, Kaplan argues that the multiplicity of threads in Jewish life today represents the process of a radical transformation "nothing less than metamorphosis." It is in this way that Judaism is creating its own future, the greater Judaism in the making.

A History Of Judaism written by Martin Goodman and has been published by Allen Lane this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Jews categories.

Judaism is by some distance the oldest of the three Abrahamic religions and, despite the extraordinarily varied forms it has taken and diverse beliefs it has contained over three millennia, it has been generally understood by both Jews and gentiles as a single entity. There have been many histories of the Jewish people but remarkably few attempts to relate the history and evolution of Judaism itself. In this book, the first comprehensive, single-volume work of its kind in English, Martin Goodman explains how Judaism came to be and how it has developed from one period to another, as well as the ways in which its varieties have related to each other. A History of Judaismranges from the religion's inception amidst polytheistic societies in the second and first millennia BCE, through the Temple cult at the time of Jesus to the rabbis, mystics and messiahs of medieval and early modern times and, finally, the many denominations of the contemporary Jewish world. It is a truly global story, spanning (of course) the Middle East, Europe and North Africa, but also China, India and America, and one that accounts for the threads of doctrinal and philosophical debate running through the religion's history as well as the institutions on which (or in reaction to which) all forms of Judaism are based. This book addresses one of the world's great religions on a grander scale than any predecessor.
