The History and Politics of Latin American Theology: The Problem of Theology and Civil Society, explores the contributions of major Latin American theologians to the intellectual and pastoral discussion of Christian involvement in contemporary politics. The first volume in this trilogy examined the ecclesiastic setting created by the first generation of Liberation Theologians, and the political challenges and critiques made of this first generation. This second volume picks up from here, examining a changed ecclesial setting and new theological and political challenges for Latin American theology. It follows a similar pattern in that it provides a history through examination of significant characters shaping the history, politics and theology of the period. Again it ends with an examination of pressing contemporary issues and asks important questions about how theology can deal with these issues in an increasingly secular world.Whereas in volume I the first generation of theologians were examined and the political environment of that time set out, here in volume II, the second and some of the third generation of Latin American theologians are examined, and the political issues under the spotlight are that of human rights and 'the Disappeared', alongside disenfranchisement of the poor and political violence and paramilitary activity. The progression of Latin American theologians is traced here, through their involvement in social movements and the relation between the Church and civil society, as the Church disappears from the centrality of society for the majority, and Christian communities become interspersed with other parts of a wider community. This is a truly interdisciplinary book, in that where as religion and politics are often used as concepts that exist in separation, here they are devices for an interpretative project. Here historical-comparative methods are used to inform the reader in detail, and the importance of liberation theology is shown for contemporary, post 9/11 debates on war, peace, economic growth, and the place of the poor within the politics of the rich.

In this final volume of his trilogy on "The History and Politics of Latin American Theology", Mario Aguilar explores how the Church and individual theologians have adapted to the change from the centre to the periphery. Mario Aguilar investigates how theologians in Latin America interact with processes of globalization, secularization, the struggle for equality and climate change. He suggests that the periphery as a place of theologizing is central to tackling problems in society. This final volume of the trilogy maps out Aguilar's own theology of the periphery and combines his own experience with his profound knowledge of the history of Latin American Liberation Theology in the twentieth and early twenty-first century. Aguilar's trilogy offers an unprecedented overview and critique of one of the most important theological movements of the twentieth century.

Democracy And Development In Latin America written by David Lehmann and has been published by Temple University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-12-04 with History categories.

Soloway (history, U. of N. Carolina) unravels the development and context of the eugenics movement which promoted a theory of biosocial engineering through selective reproduction during the early years of the 20th century. He connects the rise of the movement to anxieties about the size and social composition of the population and discusses the movement's special relevance as progenitor of more recent ideas of sociobiological engineering. Lehmann (development studies, Cambridge Univ.) presents an intellectual history of Latin America over the past 40 years, focusing on Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. He integrates three strains of development: the intellectual currents of social science, the renovation of Catholic thought and practice, and the emergence of popular social movements. The Future Of Liberation Theology written by Ivan Petrella and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-02 with Religion categories.

The Future of Liberation Theology envisions a radical new direction for Latin American liberation theology. One of a new generation of Latin American theologians, Ivan Petrella shows that despite the current dominance of 'end of history' ideology, liberation theologians need not abandon their belief that the theological rereading of Christianity must be linked to the development of 'historical projects' - models of political and economic organization that would replace an unjust status quo. In the absence of historical projects, liberation theology currently finds itself unable to move beyond merely talking about liberation toward actually enacting it in society. Providing a bold new interpretation of the current state and potential future of liberation theology, Ivan Petrella brings together original research on the movement, with developments in political theory, critical legal theory and political economy to reconstruct liberation theology's understanding of theology, democracy and capitalism. The result is the recovery of historical projects, thus allowing liberation theologians to once again place the reality of liberation, and not just the promise, at the forefront of their task.

This volume presents a project of empirical research on issues of theology, sexuality, and reproductive health and rights. It was carried out by researchers from two theological institutions in Brazil and Colombia in close contact with the grassroots in various civil-society organizations. Numerous studies at twenty-six Latin American institutions on the relation between theology and HIV/AIDS prepared the way for this project. It promotes and applies methodologies for Latin American popular education and participatory action research (PAR). While the project was finalized long before the COVID-19 pandemic hit Latin America and the world, the pandemic gave fresh evidence of the relevance of the project. The present volume is the English translation of the initial Portuguese and Spanish reports about the project, enriched with a new preface. The editors are delighted that this translation will help spread the vital insights from this research to a wider and global readership.

A Theology Of Liberation written by Gustavo GutiŽerrez and has been published by Orbis Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988-01-01 with Religion categories.

This is the credo and seminal text of the movement which was later characterized as liberation theology. The book burst upon the scene in the early seventies, and was swiftly acknowledged as a pioneering and prophetic approach to theology which famously made an option for the poor, placing the exploited, the alienated, and the economically wretched at the centre of a programme where "the oppressed and maimed and blind and lame" were prioritized at the expense of those who either maintained the status quo or who abused the structures of power for their own ends. This powerful, compassionate and radical book attracted criticism for daring to mix politics and religion in so explicit a manner, but was also welcomed by those who had the capacity to see that its agenda was nothing more nor less than to give "good news to the poor", and redeem God's people from bondage.
