Excerpt from A Student's Textbook in the History of Education Some years ago I prepared a syllabus in the history of education for the use of my undergraduate classes in the College of the City of New York and in an extension course offered to teachers in the city. This volume is the result of a suggestion on the part of those pupils that the syllabus be expanded into a textbook. It is written primarily as a teaching instrument, for students who are preparing to teach or who have a cultural interest in the subject but who are unable at the time to undertake a deeper or more detailed study than the survey here presented. Certain characteristics which have been kept in view ought, perhaps, to be mentioned. 1. It is intended to be of practical assistance to the teacher in giving him a better understanding of present-day problems in education. Unless the history of education throws light upon the educational principles and practices of today, it has only an academic interest and should not be a prescribed subject in the training of a teacher. A series of questions and of topics for study has been put at the end of each chapter, therefore, to suggest further study in the relation of the content to the problems that confront us today, and to make clear the manner in which past experience may help to clarify present theories and practices.
