In April, 1840, the "Latter-Day Saints," or Mormons, came in large numbers to Illinois, and purchased a tract of land on the east bank of the Mississippi, at a point formerly known by the name of Commerce. Here they commenced building a city which they called Nauvoo, a Hebrew word, signifying, according to Mormon interpretation, "peaceable," or "pleasant." Nature has not formed along the "Great River," a more picturesque or eligible site for a large city.
