The History of Ireland: 17th Century in three volumes is a historical account of Ireland in the 17th century, covering the period from 1603, when James VI King of Scots became James I of England and Ireland, to the Glorious Revolution and the end of Stuart's reign in Ireland. First part of the book spans from 1603 to 1642 covering the period from the time King James VI united the Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland in a personal union to the Wars of the Three Kingdoms an intertwined series of conflicts that led to abolition of monarchy and the interregnum. Second part covers the period from 1642 to the end of interregnum in 1660 when Charles II was restored to the thrones of the three realms. The final part of the work covers the years from the restoration of monarchy to the Glorious Revolution, the overthrowing of the Stuart Dynasty and the crowning of William of Orange for the king of England, Ireland and Scotland.

One of Few Surviving Works. This is one of the finest surviving works on Irish history. It was originally written in 17th century gaelic by Dr. Keating. This edition was fully translated into modern English by John O'Mahoney, including voluminous footnotes which could be made into a book unto themselves. This is the entire 3 volume IGF set, and the rare translation by O'Mahoney, published by the Irish Genealogical Foundation. "Seathrún Céitinn", the author, is better known in English as "Geoffrey Keating". He served as a historian, poet and clergyman in 17th century. This book, his "History of Ireland" or "Foras Feasa ar Éirinn", or "Foundation of Knowledge on Ireland", was originally written in the Gaelic language, in the 17th century, during the reign of Charles I of England.

In Seventeenth-Century Ireland, Professor Raymond Gillespie, one of Ireland's most eminent historians, tries to understand Ireland in the seventeenth century in a new way. Most surveys of seventeenth-century Ireland approach the period using war, conquest, plantation and colonisation as their organising themes. It does not see Ireland as a passive receptor of colonial ideas imposed from above. In fact, Professor Gillespie argues that the seventeenth century was a uniquely creative moment in Ireland's history, as the various social and political groups within the country tried to forge new compromises. He also shows how and why they failed to do so. Well-established ideas of monarchy, social hierarchy and honour were under pressure in a fast-changing world. Political, religious, social and economic circumstances were all in flux. The common ambition of every faction was the creation of a usable focus of governance. Thus plantations, the constitutional experiments of Wentworth in the 1630s, the Confederation of the 1640s, the republican 1650s and the royalist reaction of the latter part of the century can be seen not simply as episodes in colonial domination but as part of an on-going attempt to find a modus vivendi within Ireland, often compromised by external influences. Many of the chapters address, from national, regional and individual perspectives, the key events, institutions and processes that transformed the history of early modern Ireland. Ulster Since 1600 surveys the history of the province from plantation to partition, and onwards from the formation of the Northern Ireland state to the 'Troubles' of recent decades. It synthesises existing historical knowledge and also brings new insights to bear on the political, social, and economic evolution of the province and its peoples. The word 'Ulster' conjures up images of communal conflict, sectarianism, and peace processes of indefinite duration but, as this volume shows, there is much more to the history of Ulster and its peoples. From the Plantation of Ulster in the early seventeenth century, the province has been home to three major ethnic and religious groups. It was this radically reconstituted society that produced a precociously early emigration to North America, that celebrated the outbreak of the French Revolution, and that in the Victorian era hosted Ireland's first industrial city. Its rural poor suffered destruction and death during the Great Famine of the 1840s, along with their counterparts in the south of Ireland. Its urban working classes had much in common with the industrial classes of England and Scotland, in terms of religiosity, popular entertainment, labour movements, gender, and family relationships. This multi-authored volume is a major contribution to the history of Ireland and to Ireland's contested place in the British and the wider world.
