With this view, he has spared no pains in consulting every available record of former ages, or in col lecting every interesting event of later date. The present History is the fruit of his exertions; and he feels stimulated by the hope, and im pressed with the conviction, that it will be found more complete, comprehensive, and satisfactory, than anything that has yet been written upon the subject.
