Excerpt from The History of Medicine and Medical Men of Camden County, New Jersey Venesection began to be employed about 1750 and became so popular with physicians that it was employed in all cases, the lancet being their invariable accompaniment. Now, so completely has it fallen into discredit that but few of the present members of the Cam den County Medical Society have ever bled a patient. Boerhaave, elected professor at Leyden in 1701, announced the doctrine that all dis eases were the result of humors in the blood. This was accepted by physicians everywhere, who, in accordance with it, prohibited the use of cold drinks in sickness, but made their patients drink hot teas, keep the window closed to prevent the ingress of fresh air, and plied them with bed-covers to induce perspiration. There are old residents here who well remember the discomforts and mis ery of such treatment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of Medicine in New Jersey and of Its Medical Men, From the Settlement of the Province to A D. 1800 In the year 1875 the Medical Society of New Jersey resolved to publish its "Old Transactions," from its institution in 1766 to 1800. My official relations to the Society involved the editorship of the volume. I had previously found, after much enquiry, that nothing was known of the character of its founders, not even their residence; nor had anything been published heretofore, which furnished any information upon the condition of Medicine in New Jersey. A number of historical addresses had been read before the Society, and had been published. None of these covered the ground which I found myself prompted to occupy in the preparation of this work. It was begun with the purpose of making a record which should be a supplement of a few pages to the old records which I was charged with editing. I soon discovered that I had entered upon a new historical field, and had commenced to glean "even among the sheaves." I did not resist the inviting opportunity which was presented, and have, for five years, found pleasure and profit in thus employing my leisure time. Excerpt from History of the Medical Profession of Camden County, N. J: Including a Brief Review of the Charitable Institutions Within the County In presenting this work to the public, the author desires to state that the utmost pains have been taken to insure its accuracy. In addition to the references given in the foot-notes of the work, indebtedness is here acknowledged to the personal records that have been furnished him and to the minutes, published transactions and reports of the societies, associations, orders and institutions considered; but the incompleteness of some of these is, however, a matter of regret. Next to the consecutive history of professional matters within Camden county, and of the kindred professions of pharmacy and dentistry, the social, educational, political and military relationship of the medical fraternity to the City and County of Camden, the State of New Jersey and to the Government of the United States, has been carefully presented. This volume was prepared while the author was engaged in arduous professional duties, and it is his hope that its reader will derive as much pleasure from its perusal as it has afforded him in its preparation. This line, though not proving to be a final adjustment of a controversy which lasted many years, was, in a general way, substantially the line of division finally adopted. In 1691 Coxe conveyed the government to the West Jersey Society, composed of forty-eight persons, and 1 Smith's History. 1 Ibid. Cox: -: . CRAIG. finally sold out his interest to Sir Thomas"Lane for 9,000. In a few years thereafter (1702) the Proprietors of East and West Jersey surrendered to the Crown all the powers of government which they supposed were vested in them, and were confirmed in all their rights in the soil with the quit rents. In November 16, of the same year, Lord Cornbury was appointed by the Queen, "Captain-General and Governor-in-Chief of Nova Caesarea or New Jersey in America."1 DAVID CRAIG.
