Excerpt from The History of North Atlantic Steam Navigation: With Some Account of Early Ships and Shipowners The following pages were originally written, for private circulation only, during a period of enforced leisure from ill-health. They have been revised for publication at the earnest request of a few old friends of the Author interested in steam shipping. The only merit claimed for them is that of accuracy, to attain which the greatest pains have been taken. Having been present at the launch of the first steamship built for the North Atlantic trade, the Great Western, in 1837, and that of the first ocean screw steamship, the Great Britain, in 1843, an having watched every Atlantic steamship with the deepest interest for fifty-six years, during which he has crossed the Atlantic thirty-seven times in various lines, the Author trusts he may not be considered open to the charge of presumption in thus acceding to the wishes of his friends.
