This collection of 23 articles is the output of lectures in special sessions on “The History of Theoretical, Material and Computational Mechanics” within the yearly conferences of the GAMM in the years 2010 in Karlsruhe, Germany, 2011 in Graz, Austria, and in 2012 in Darmstadt, Germany; GAMM is the “Association for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics”, founded in 1922 by Ludwig Prandtl and Richard von Mises. The contributions in this volume discuss different aspects of mechanics. They are related to solid and fluid mechanics in general and to specific problems in these areas including the development of numerical solution techniques. In the first part the origins and developments of conservation principles in mechanics and related variational methods are treated together with challenging applications from the 17th to the 20th century. Part II treats general and more specific aspects of material theories of deforming solid continua and porous soils. and Part III presents important theoretical and engineering developments in fluid mechanics, beginning with remarkable inventions in old Egypt, the still dominating role of the Navier-Stokes PDEs for fluid flows and their complex solutions for a wide field of parameters as well as the invention of pumps and turbines in the 19th and 20th century. The last part gives a survey on the development of direct variational methods – the Finite Element Method – in the 20th century with many extensions and generalizations.

Solid Mechanics written by Albrecht Bertram and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-13 with Science categories.

This textbook offers an introduction to modeling the mechanical behavior of solids within continuum mechanics and thermodynamics. To illustrate the fundamental principles, the book starts with an overview of the most important models in one dimension. Tensor calculus, which is called for in three-dimensional modeling, is concisely presented in the second part of the book. Once the reader is equipped with these essential mathematical tools, the third part of the book develops the foundations of continuum mechanics right from the beginning. Lastly, the book’s fourth part focuses on modeling the mechanics of materials and in particular elasticity, viscoelasticity and plasticity. Intended as an introductory textbook for students and for professionals interested in self-study, it also features numerous worked-out examples to aid in understanding.

Elasticity And Plasticity Of Large Deformations written by Albrecht Bertram and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-07 with Science categories.

This book presents an introduction to material theory and, in particular, to elasticity, plasticity and viscoelasticity, to bring the reader close to the frontiers of today’s knowledge in these particular fields. It starts right from the beginning without assuming much knowledge of the subject. Hence, the book is generally comprehensible to all engineers, physicists, mathematicians, and others. At the beginning of each new section, a brief Comment on the Literature contains recommendations for further reading. This book includes an updated reference list and over 100 changes throughout the book. It contains the latest knowledge on the subject. Two new chapters have been added in this new edition. Now finite viscoelasticity is included, and an Essay on gradient materials, which have recently drawn much attention.

Direct Methods For Limit State Of Materials And Structures written by Giovanni Garcea and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08-23 with Science categories.

This book provides an overview of direct methods, such as limit and shakedown analysis, which are intended for avoiding cumbersome step-by-step calculations to determine the limit states of mechanical structures under monotone, cyclic or variable actions with unknown loading history. The book comprises several contributions that demonstrate how tremendous advances in numerical methods, especially in optimization, have contributed to the success of direct methods and their applicability to practical engineering problems in structural mechanics and mechanics of materials. The contents reflect the outcomes of the workshop “Direct Methods for Limit State of Materials and Structures,” held in Cosenza, Italy in June 2022.
