The first biography of Rudolf Hess since his death in August 1987. Traces Hess's political evolution towards Nazism. He was in Munich in 1919 and joined the anti-Marxist anti-democratic, and antisemitic Thule Gesellschaft. Hess became a disciple of Karl Haushofer and a friend of Dietrich Eckart, editor of the antisemitic newspaper "Auf Gut Deutsch" and later of the "Völkischer Beobachter". He was attracted to Hitler in 1919, becoming an intimate follower and a fervent promoter of Hitler's personality cult. Hess endorsed Nazi racial doctrine and antisemitic propaganda and signed, as Hitler's deputy, anti-Jewish decrees from 1933 to 1938 (although he reportedly protested against the "Kristallnacht" pogrom). Pp. 165ff. deal with his flight to Scotland in May 1941 and its repercussions.

In the war against Hitler, the Allies had to use every ounce of cunning and trickery that they possessed. Combining military deceptions with the double-agent network run by the intelligence services, they were able to send the enemy misleading information about Allied troops, plans and operations. From moving imaginary armies around the desert to putting a corpse with false papers floating in the Mediterranean, and from faking successful bombing campaigns to the convoluted deceptions which kept part of the German forces away from Normandy prior to D-Day, Terry Crowdy explores the deception war that combined the double-agent network with ingenious plans to confuse and hoodwink the Führer.

For sixty years there has been an unprecedented cover-up by both the British Establishment and successive generations of historians about the flight of Hitler's Deputy Rudolf Hess to Scotland in May 1941. Long dismissed as the misguided attempt of a madman to make contact with a non-existent British peace party Double Standards explosively reveals that Hess's peace mission was one of the pivotal events of the twentieth century - and that the Establishment had very good reasons for covering up the truth: the Establishment WAS the peace party that Hess had come to meet. Even more shockingly, the book reveals that members of the Royal Family itself - whose involvement in the Hess affair has been conveniently airbrushed out of history - were at the heart of this group. Exposing the wartime propaganda that still masquerades as fact, and based on entirely new material from eyewitnesses, hitherto inaccessible archives and intelligence sources, Double Standards reveals that Hess's peace mission was of supreme importance. It raises some of the most intriguing questions about the history of the twentieth century. Double Standards' mission is to answer them.
