Excerpt from The Homer of Aristotle This monograph is intended as a supplement to the writer's edition of Aristotle's Poetics, l the results of which both for text and interpretation are here assumed.2 It was shown there that the initial words of the Defini tion of Tragedy should be rendered literally The feigning of a virtuous experience, which interpreted from the author's ethical and political theories means Fiction about kings and queens. And though the philosopher does not like Plato identify the Homeric style with Tragedy, he holds that in these essentials the two coincide and the Unity which he postulates in Tragedy is found by him to an unsurpassed extent in the Iliad and the Odyssey. The following is an attempt at working out these theorems from the hints which the treatise offers and on the lines which it suggests. The text of the Homeric Poems employed is that of Monro and Allen in the Oxford Classical Series; and the Translations of Butcher, Lang, Leaf and Myers are assumed to be correct, except where differences are noted. General reference is made to the Greek Grammar Of R. Kuhner, the Homeric Lexicon Of H. Ebeling, and the Dictionary of Greek Proper Names of W. Pape for such matters as come within their scope. The great helmsman, the watchdog of the people, the medicine the state needs: all these images originated in ancient Greece, yet retain the capacity to influence an audience today. This is the first systematic study of political imagery in ancient Greek literature, history and thought, tracing it from its appearance, influenced by Near Eastern precursors, in Homer and Hesiod, to the end of the classical period and Plato's deployment of images like the helmsman and the doctor in the service of his political philosophy. Tracing the interrelationship among play, poetic imitation, and power to the Hellenic world, Mihai I. Spariosu provides a revisionist model of cultural change in Greek antiquity. Challenging the traditional and static distinction made between archaic and later Greek culture, Spariosu's perspective is grounded in a dialectical understanding of values whose dominance depends on cultural emphasis and which shifts through time. Literary recognition is a technical term for a climactic plot device. Odysseys of Recognition claims that interpersonal recognition is constituted by performance, and brings performance theory into dialogue with poetics, politics, and philosophy. By observing Odysseus figures from Homer to Kleist, Ellwood Wiggins offers an alternative to conventional intellectual histories that situate the invention of the interior self in modernity. Through strategic readings of Aristotle, this elegantly written, innovative study recovers an understanding of interpersonal recognition that has become strange and counterintuitive. Penelope in Homer’s Odyssey offers a model for agency in ethical knowledge that has a lot to teach us today. Early modern and eighteenth-century characters, meanwhile, discover themselves not deep within an impenetrable self, but in the interpersonal space between people in the world.
