The gripping true crime story of a child abducted by his father from his mother, and the international race to rescue him against dangerous odds. Two close encounters with death convince Darren Franklin that his career in global private security is not the healthiest. Meanwhile Scottish nurse Diane is on a life-changing journey of her own after a Shirley Valentine-style romance on a Greek holiday island. As she moves to Australia to marry her Greek lover and start a family, Darren escapes a contract on his life and teams up with a former British special forces operative to get into the business of rescuing abducted children. Then Darren’s and Diane’s paths cross. After Diane’s marriage breaks down, her ex takes their four-year-old son Theo back to the Greek islands, and, when all attempts to get her son back via the courts have failed, Darren’s company is called in to get him back. As Diane waits anxiously in the wings, Darren and his small team must contend with hostile locals, double-crossing police, and dubious legal contacts to conduct surveillance on their target, formulate a plan, and grab the boy before making their hazardous escape. They can trust no one. A whole island community is against them, they have their suspicions about their own lawyer, and the charity go-between on their team is actively leaking details of their plans, risking their mission, and possibly their lives. Set against an epidemic of parental abductions, and a background of frequent failed recoveries, the action swings from Britain to South America to Australia, to the USA and the Greek Islands on a dramatic, emotional roller coaster from start to finish.

This thesis presents a theory to help military leaders determine the best time to conduct a hostage rescue attempt. The theory is based on the phenomenon of a hostage crisis "biorhythm." According to the theory, there are four principles essential for hostage rescue mission success: surprise, intelligence, operator's skill, and deception. These principles are derived from planning models used in special operations, personal experience, and an analysis of six historical case studies. The case studies show that if any one of these four principles was overlooked, the operation was doomed. The principles have been determined to be the most critical factors that change as a hostage crisis develops. The focus of this thesis is an in-depth case study of the hostage rescue operation Chavin de Huantar in Lima, Peru. This case study presents compelling evidence to reinforce the author's hypothesis, and serves as a model for successful rescue operations. Another focus of this thesis is the use of game theory analysis during a hostage crisis. The findings of the thesis will help decision makers plan and organize hostage rescue forces to act at the appropriate time, maximizing their chances of success. In addition, it will provide a useful planning model that can be implemented effectively and accurately, presenting a clear picture of possible outcomes throughout a hostage crisis. It is hoped that this thesis will help the reader become a better strategist during the planning, preparation, and execution of a hostage rescue operation. The other case studies that are analyzed according to the biorhythm theory are Operation Eagle Claw, launched to rescue the Iran hostages in Tehran in April 1980; the De Punt train hijacking in Holland in May-June 1977; the Munich Olympics Massacre in West Germany in Sep 1972; Egypt Air Flight 648 at Malta in Nov 1978; and Operation Fire Magic, Lufthansa Flight 181, Mogadishu, Somalia in Oct 1977. Cold Zero written by Christopher Whitcomb and has been published by Grand Central Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-15 with Political Science categories.

Only 200 people have ever been in Christopher Whitcomb's elite branch of the F.B.I. The Hostage Rescue Team is its most highly trained and specialized squadron -- equivalent to the Navy's Seals and the Army's Delta Force -- charged with terrorist capture, hostage situations, and other large-scale emergencies in the U.S. and around the world. Whitcomb is the first HRT member ever to write about his experience. With breathtaking immediacy, Whitcomb describes the brutal training, the weapons and tactics, and the unbreakable camaraderie of the HRT. In short order, after joining HRT in 1991, Whitcomb was sent on missions to Ruby Ridge and Waco, and his frank assessment of those missions is must reading for anyone interested in modern law enforcement. Only rarely does a writer this accomplished have a life this dramatic. Cold Zero is a book of rare action and emotion, and one that introduces a remarkable new writer to the world.

'Captivating, a John le Carre-esque yarn' Telegraph 'A thoroughly good read' Michael Portillo, author of Portillo's Hidden History of Britain and presenter of Great British Railway Journeys 'A compelling story of courage, determination and skill' Terry Waite CBE, author of Taken on Trust The true story of a retired British army officer's private Somali-hostage rescue mission During the peak of the Somali piracy crisis, three ships - from Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan - were hijacked and then abandoned to their fate by their employers, who lacked the money to pay ransoms. All would still be there, were it not for Colonel John Steed, a retired British military attaché, who launched his own private mission to free them. At 65, Colonel Steed was hardly an ideal saviour. With no experience in hostage negotiations and no money behind him, he had to raise the ransom cash from scratch, running the operation from his spare room and ferrying million-dollar ransom payments around in the boot of his car. Drawing on first-hand interviews, former chief foreign correspondent of The Sunday Telegraph, Colin Freeman, who has himself spent time held hostage by Somali pirates, takes readers on an inside track into the world of hostage negotiation and one man's heroic rescue mission.
